It is so important for nurses to know what needs to be done, how to do it and who to contact in times of concern, which is why I agree with many of the key points that you mentioned. A nurse manager needs to maintain these qualities to be an effective leader. When assignments are clear, and expectations for the shift are understood, it makes things run smoothly. Medicine and patient care is unpredictable, but when you have a strong leader who is capable of being fair, consistent and approachable, as you stated, it gives you a sense of stability. I have experienced managers who have come short of some of these leadership qualities, and it creates an uncomfortable environment for both nurse and patient. It is imperative
for good communication to be a standard for nurses in a managerial position, because this is the basis for us to be able to complete our tasks for a particular shift. A democratic approach to nurse managing is a good way of maintaining fairness as well as opening a forum for everyone to participate.
