Receiving feedback is essential to learning as it provides a way to assess how effective and appropriate my intervention that was geared towards capacity build. Her choice of words and questions were in a tone that made me feel like I was being put down, belittled due to the perceived power imbalance this created. I especially felt this, when she used the words “Really, Jessica” and putting me on the spot to respond to a remark as to whether I agreed. I also felt I was the one being criticized for the choice I made for the board not my work. As I felt that I was not given much guidance or support and was left to do it. After reflecting on how I received feedback, I realize and know that when receiving feedback it is hard for the person providing feedback to be honest if they are worried about upsetting you.
