They were both portrayed as though they did not want to be in their marriage. After reading more about them I understood Marie more than I did when watching the movie. I also learned a little more about Frank, although I was still confused as to why he was such an angry man. In the movie he just seems like a weird depressed old man. After reading about how the couple met, it became clear that Marie’s love for Frank was just lust. Frank also seems much younger when reading about him. The movie does a decent job at showing why he does not, but the book has more detail that could not be explained through acting. Emil’s feelings for Marie were portrayed well in both; it is just that he seems like an angry man of few words in the movie. Part IX of “Neighboring Fields,” is particularly my favorite part because it shows how Emil acts with other girls when Marie is around. It is obvious that he wants to be with her and that she wants to be with him, but they cannot because Marie is married. While watching the movie, I could visually understand why Marie really did not want to be with Emil. I could understand it in the book as well, but the movie showed that particular part
