Obesity Education Persuasive Speech
My name is Caitlin Finton and I am a senior Nutrition and Dietetics student at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. I am writing to urge you to support H. R. 3800, The Nutrition Education Act. As you may know, obesity is one of the major contributing factors of chronic disease in our country and this issue is continuing to raise concern. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, childhood obesity rates are at 17% and expected to increase to 20% by 2020.
Every year, billions of dollars are spent in healthcare costs for preventable diseases such as obesity. Centers for Disease Control estimated obesity-related healthcare cost to be $147 billion in 2008 and will continue to rise annually if action is not taken.
