I read “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria” by Beverly Daniel Tatum and “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan. I choose both essays due to the fact that they were the first two in the prescribed reading of our text for this week. I have come to realize that I am just not attracted to any of our readings from our text, and just working my way through them seems to be working. I will say that each essay so far, has left me somewhat surprised, as far as gaining incites on issues and topics that I never would have received, if left to my own intentions.…

At 1:00 p.m. I entered into Evoline C. West Elementary school on Thursday, July 12 2012 for an interview with Mrs. Yolanda Lawrence. As I entered the classroom, I was greeted by Mrs. Lawrence, the head teacher in this classroom. Mrs. Lawrence has no assistant at this present because of it being in the summer. After I entered into the classroom, the entire class welcomed me with “hello Ms. Flournoy”. It made my day to see all of those smiley faces greeting me. This was a 2nd grade classroom which consisted of 17 students of which 8 were girls and 9 were boys. This interview and observation was a total of 2 hours long. During the observation of Mrs. Lawrence classroom, I noticed how the students flocked under Mrs. Lawrence as she started reading one their favorite books before they did their afternoon lesson. For some reason I got an excitement about doing this interview.…

During the observation, I worked with the students mainly within groups. The reason is because the main time I was there the teacher would lecture. The only opportunity I had to work with the children was after the lesson, when she would assign a project or activity for the students. I learned how to work with every type of children, because not every child is the same or learns the same way. Some students needed more attention or more help and others attained the material quicker.…

“When students cut [classes], some just go and get high, others go drink, and others just sit there and watch them. Others go and watch TV, they eat, some sit at the bus stop… they’ll go call somebody. Anything instead of going to class” This above quote is from an urban student in Oakland, California (Lee, 1999). While it is a broad generalization it is one that unfortunately describes a significant amount of students that attend urban schools. For numerous reasons, urban students have a lack of motivation to learn. A student’s motivation to learn directly affects their achievement; without one you can not have the other.…
