Also the relationship between instructor and students seemed very important as well. It was mentioned that interaction between students and instructor’s created a positive effect on relatively shy individuals. An instructor or teacher that was also involved within the program provided a positive feature for the students, and allowed for students to be more relaxed and at ease. This sense of “security” and “enthusiasm” by the instructor lead to more student involvement on post discussions (Nagel, 2009). In all though it research found that students that focused more on the quality of their post rather than just the quantity of post lead to better discussions and better overall environment of the classroom. This approach of quality over quantity lead to more in depth discussions and high thinking for…

To this learner that was the most valuable learning experiences every. My Instructor, help open up our minds and push us to answer questions that we might not have thought about, that called for us to do additional research to gain a better understanding of our research, and this learners classmates help to make the experience more of and enjoyment than a pain. They were able to do this by helping this learner feel ok about her long drawn out reports. Every time this learner thought she missed the point for the discussion, they help me to feel reassure that I was on the right track. They added to this learner report my interjecting their thoughts, they were polite and they examine this learner’s work. That to this learner is the most valuable experience a student can ever have, and it definitely will help in the professional world. Thank you Dr. Conis and…

There are many strategies and techniques that could be used in the classroom to encourage curiosity in math, but the four I chose to discuss I thought would be the most beneficial. This is due to the way they support auditory, visual, and kinesthetic styles of learning. The four strategies teachers could use to encourage curiosity towards mathematics in a classroom include co-operative learning, guided or discovery learning, simulate real life experiences, and active student learning. These four learning strategies range from group learning to the use of manipulatives to real life experiences and group discussions where students can share their ideas and thinking processes. Therefore, students would be able to learn in a variety of formats like listening, seeing, taking notes, and by using their hands.…

For students to learn and fully understand what is being taught to them they need the opportunity to work hands-on. They need to practice skills in real life situations to completely reinforce the lessons being taught. By allowing hands-on activities this allows for their individual way of thinking to come through and help me to understand their learning styles better. When given the opportunity to input, students are motivated to accomplish the skills they have set and work harder to reach their goals.…
Upon walking in to Roger Beadle’s classroom, any person can see that it is set up with the students in mind, having tables versus desks which suggest that group work is done frequently and the walls are covered from top to bottom in examples of the students’ work from throughout the year. He uses a variety of approaches to encourage the students to respond and participate and the student responses are woven into each of the lessons. Students participate as both learners and teachers. The students never hesitate to ask for clarification on a concept or statement and always respectfully challenge Mr. Beadle or the other students by sharing their points of view or beliefs. Overall, Mr. Beadle sets the tone of a highly respectful attitude by eliciting courteous remarks, speaking directly to the students appropriate for their grade level and maturity, and modeling positive behavior during debates or when an opposing viewpoint is offered. He also ensures that cooperative learning takes place in the class by having students share their thinking in large and small groups.…

As part of Tech’s vibrant engineering program, I will contribute through collaborative work with others and through intelligent and productive class discussions. I’ve been part of my high school’s heavily discussion-based International Baccalaureate program for the last four years; consequently, I’ve learned how to have intelligent and productive discussions and debates. I’ve also realized of these exchanges in my development as a thinker. I’m a better student and a thinker because of the discussions I’ve had, and I will use my discussion skills to make the most of my education at Georgia Tech. Also important in the IB program is collaborative work, and consequently I’ve learned to navigate the difficulties of working with others and to appreciate the power of multiple minds working towards a shared goal. At Georgia Tech, I will be a hard-working, collaborative member of any group. Beyond discussions and teamwork, I think that one of my most important contributions to Georgia Tech (given the challenging academic environment) will be my ability to stay calm under enormous stress, and to…
