Throughout reading the epic poem The Odyssey there has been numerous occasions that I,Elijah Smith have related with Homer’s writing and importantly the main character Odysseus .
The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus’ journey during the Trojan War. Odysseus, a brave and cunning leader from the land of Ithaka, is far away from his family and homeland. During this extended time period he is faced with many setbacks and issues on his 20 year excursion. Being myself I did not properly prepare for this event and ignored the training beforehand which had led to greater consequences. The leaders of the program gave us worksheets on how to train when going on the trip so we wouldn’t be struggling and miserable but being my seventh grade self all i was thinking about was football and video games and did none of the tasks given. This is similar to when Odysseus gives instructions to the crew about not to mess with the animals on the island with the cyclops, but the crew ignores them. Fast forward to the event the day of arrival on base camp we set our bags down and immediately build shelters. Once we were settled, we prepared for the first nightwalk. During the night things seemed a bit off and strange to me just the type of feeling you get when you are out of your natural living space and just haven't felt comfortable; everyone said that something felt weird to them kind of like how i was feeling earlier and then it came to be. Getting to the curb to approach a taxi these two grown men come out of nowhere and start having an intense break dance battle. Judging to what the two were saying it seemed like they had encountered each other before and it was all coming down to the wire. Then all of a sudden the taller man does a complete backflip and ends it with a split. My reaction was similar to the suitors’ reaction, “ But along came this beggar, drifting out of the blue— strung his bow with ease and shot through all the axes!’” They were as shocked as I was. Everyone outside began to stare and applaud the man who had done the stunt. Seeing this sight made me think how and why did this event all come about? In the end unknowing of how the event came to be both performs parted ways before an explanation.
