Odysseus Journey In Homer's Odyssey

Success is something that is a reward, it is never just handed to you. This is what I learned last summer 5,043 miles away from home. In Tipperary, Ireland my 23 teammates showed our coaches, fans, and competitors that you don’t have to be Irish to beat them in their own game. For the first time in history, San Francisco sent a girls camogie team over to Europe for Feile (a gaelic tournament), not expecting that we would go very far, we went for the craic. We were most definitely doubted but proved all of the hopeless wrong. I think that my story relates to Odysseus’ journey in the Odyssey by Homer Odysseus and I both started off with denial of our calling and eventually accepted the call. Throughout my adventure I encountered some obstacles just like Odysseus. Through jet lag,
Odysseus was also needed in the war, he had to go whether he liked it or not. So we started training in September of 2015 for a tournament hosted in June 2016, every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday for 8 months. Through the cold winter nights, and the hot summer days our three coaches James, Christy, my dad Mark, and our 23 girls from ages 11 to 14 practiced to the breaking point. Odysseus himself also encountered trouble during his calling, the Trojan War. When we arrived in Dublin Ireland we stayed one night in the closest hotel and the next morning hopped on the bus which took us to the countryside. “Wake up ladies! We have our first game in 2 hours!!!” Coach James screamed on the bus microphone. As we pulled up to Mountrath County Laois, we were greeted by the signs and the townspeople. This is where all of my family is from, so I was welcomed by my aunts, uncles, cousins and grannies. We got into game mode, not knowing what to expect, the bare beginning.
