Oedipus Identity
The ultimate tragedy where a man named Oedipus marries his own mother and kills his own father. Oedipus is a man born to king Laius with a prophecy that he will kill his own father. In a desperate attempt to avoid this they abandon him on a mountain. Oedipus and his real father will cross paths once again and have a fight that will leave the king of Laius dead. Oedipus will go to thebes and defeat the sphinx and become the king. Peace doesn't last long when a plague devastated the city until the killer is brought forward. The quest for identity is the most important theme in “Oedipus Rex” by Sophocles because it is the whole base of the tragedy. “It’s plain that all your fears are empty. Polybus was no kin to you” (page 8). Oedipus throughout the story until the end is not aware that king Laius is his real father. Once Oedipus knows that Polybus was not his real father he becomes anxious to know who his true parents are. Oedipus is on a constant search for his true identity and in the end that will cost him. Oedipus in the story starts to become paranoid that people are against him and his throne. “Was this your own design or was it Creon’s” (page 4). When Tiresias refuses to tell his prophecy Oedipus starts to get mad and accuses Tiresias of working with Creon. Oedipus is paranoid that creon has always been working against him that he starts to accuse other people even prophets that they are working with Creon against him. This all relates to the quest for identity because Oedipus while dealing with the plague in Oedipus he is also searching for who is and who isn't against him. The quest for identity fits this story because it lays the foundation for the whole story. Oedipus is a man whose past and destiny made him do things that he tried to avoid. Oedipus is constantly on the search for something or someone.“Oedipus Rex” is the perfect tragedy because it does not have happy moments in it and nor does it have a happy
