from that of other species. The domestic bitch is a monoestrous, typically non-seasonal, polytocous, spontaneous ovulator.( Concannon , 2010)
Which means the oestrous cycle is characterized by a follicular phase with spontaneous ovulation, followed by a luteal phase of about 75 days and a non-seasonal anoestrus of 2–10 months (Schaefers-Okkens AC, 2005)
Pseudocyesis (PSC), pseudopregnancy, false pregnancy or nervous lactation is a physiological syndrome defined by similar signs to those observed during the post-partum period (Allen 1986; Nelson 1996). The intensity of these symptoms is extremely variable among bitches. The dog is the only domestic animal with a CL lifespan
in the non-pregnant animal often exceeding that in pregnant animals, making pseudopregnancy an inherent phenomenon in the non-pregnant, not mated dog (Concannon 1986)The syndrome has a natural explanation. Parental care is an essential component in the life history. In group-living mammal species, care can be provided by adults other than the parents, and such care is termed alloparental care. Alloparental care is known in a wide spectrum of species, from insects to humans. Most canids that live in stable packs demonstrate cooperative breeding, where subordinates provide care to the offspring of the dominants, without reproducing themselves. (Manabi 2014) Although there are no reports of cooperative breeding in groups as free-ranging dogs are known to live in stable social groups in which all adults have mating opportunities (Pal 2011), still they are descents of the grey wolf from which they evolved thousands years ago.(Scot and Fuller ,1965)
