Old Wives Tale

“Cravings”

A recent survey by Mothering.com found that less than 20 percent of expectant parents will wait until their baby's birth to find out its gender. Finding out your baby's gender with an old wives tale is not the most reliable or scientific method for predicting gender. It is said, that the particular food cravings you have are caused by the gender of your baby. A craving a mother gets during pregnancy is a common theme among expecting mothers. The old wives tales speak of different types of food that are the telltale signs of either a boy or girl. Girl babies are geared towards the sweet tooth, especially chocolate, fruits and orange juice. A favorite food theory also involves bread, predicting your baby's gender with old wives' tales is not the most scientific or the most reliable method, for predicting your baby's gender. If you refuse to eat the heel of a loaf, it's probably because you're expecting a

My grandmother is 95 years old, and has two children. Her insight into the “cravings” tale was the small line of a girl is always sweet, but a boy is always sour. The cravings for her were donuts, and potato chips. Both her children were girls, so the wives tale proves false. Next, my mother who has had three children, said she was always told many wives tales, by her elders, but many proved untrue. Her cravings consisted of sweets including chocolate and eating ice. She can’t explain the ice eating, but says the wives tale must not hold true, because she had a boy, and mostly craved sweets. Last, my sister in law who has had one child. The cravings she described, were pickles dipped in mustard, which would point to a boy, but no a beautiful girl, who couldn’t be any sweeter. I may be bias though she’s my

Theoretical probability assumes all outcomes are equally likely. I am currently pregnant and we just recently found out the sex of the baby. We knew prior to going we had a 50/50 chance of either a boy or a girl. I used subjective probability by assuming prior to going it was a boy. ( I was right)…

“I waited and watched for seven years. I saw him come and go – Dolan”, “The thousands of injuries of Fortunate I had borne as I best could, but when ventured upon insult. I vowed revenge – The narrator” With the words spoken by these two men, in the stories, “Dolan’s Cadillac” and “The Cask of Amontillado”, one can see their ambition to get revenge on the ones who wronged. The characters, plot, and theme of the two stories are very much alike. The main characters seek revenge on the people who avenge them and gain their control of life back after their revenge has been succeeded. The theme that will best fit the stories is revenge is best served cold, in the Cask of Amontillado it’s served hot. Focusing on the characters, the narrators of “Dolan Cadillac” and the “Cask of Amontillado”, the reader can notice that they have the same thought process, and both take revenge on well known males in their society. While both authors are great writers, it is the reader’s decision on which writer they prefer.…

Ghose argues that being able to determine the sex of the baby could potentially lead to a sex-discrimination against women in society. This article also brings up the idea that if a parent was able to choose the traits of the child, this can worsen the relationship between the parent and the child, due to the fact that this can parents could be presented with tyrannical expectations (Ghose 2014). If a parent is able to dictate the traits of the child, this could hypothetically put pressure on the child that should also have the rest of his life…

This article tells the story of a man who goes through a long journey of finding himself. John was born male, and then through complications was told he was a female and now he indentifies himself as a male. I cannot comprehend how traumatic these gender and sex changes were on his life. In this one situation it shows how John, who was always told he was a girl, still behaved a like a male because in reality at birth he was. This example makes me think that society plays a part in deciding your gender and who you are. However, John was pushed to behave like a girl. He never did, he wanted to play with the stereotypical “boy” toys like trucks. Is it possible that your biological sex can determine your gender?…

According to research, approximately one in two thousand cases, a baby's genital appearance poises the question: ‘is it a boy or a girl?’ so why make fashion any different (Kitzinger and Wilkinson, 1999)…

I have known for a long time that I have an addictive nature, as I tend to become very focused on something I like and buy or accumulate as much as I can whether I need it or not. I did not want to say, however, I was addicted to food for a long time. I would rationalize my binges on sugary things as a “BIG sweet tooth” and blame my parents for it, inherited you know! The past few years it has gotten to be a problem at times. I have come to the realization, it is not my parents who created the problem but me. I am the one who loves anything sweet and cannot seem to stop at just one piece of candy but a whole bag. I am the one who continues to buy them in mass quantities and to sit at night in front of my computer and finish them off. I am the one, when depressed, or sad, or angry, who goes to buy more and eats until the bags are gone. Then I have major migraines from the coming off the sugar high, and I say I am NEVER going to do that again, only to do it again.…

Central to parents’ concept of their unborn children, gender is something that most moms and dads to-be can’t wait to discover, usually choosing to learn their baby’s sex well before delivery day. “Is it a boy or girl?” is undoubtedly the question most frequently aimed at expectant mothers around the world, so it’s no wonder that Toronto parents Kathy Witterick and David Stocker are sparking an international debate about the meaning of gender, identity, and the ideological values some parents place on their children.…

When one is approached on the topic of gender identity, it may take their mind into a million places, but with scientific study the answers come with complicated return. This is all very new and continually will be close study. In 1940, the only way to give gender identity to the baby was during delivery and whether they had a penis or vagina, the other births were thought of as birth defects. That was just 70 years ago! Granted we come along way, but still have a long way to go.…

“Human beings are either male or female, and children learn at an early age to identify themselves as one or the other. At the same time, they also learn to behave in a way that is considered typical of males or females. In short, they learn to adopt a masculine or feminine gender role. When a child is born, the parents, relatives, friends and neighbours first try to find out whether it is a boy or a girl. One look at the baby’s external sex organs normally supplies the answer, and this answer has immediate social consequences” (Haeberle, Erwin J. 1983).…
