Oliver Twist Formalistic Approach
Formalistic Approach of the movie Oliver Twist

1. Title: Oliver Twist
The title of the movie is a proper name, which indicates the story is about a specific boy. The first name “Oliver” is related to the fruit olive, which is connected to triumph; and the last name “Twist” indicates sudden changes, so that means the character might experience unexpected modifications or alterations in his life.

2. Plot

The story begins when the protagonist Oliver Twist is forced to stay in an England workhouse when he was 9 years old, with other kids of similar age. There, they were treated badly and they were given very little food, causing them to starve and live in inappropriate conditions. After a raffle, Oliver is selected to ask for more food to the adults in charge, but they were very hypocritical and got mad, so they decided to get rid of Oliver. He was close to be sold as an apprentice to a chimney sweep, but he was finally sent to live with a coffin maker (Mr. Sowerberry). He did not receive good treatment there, where he worked under the supervision of an older apprentice (Noah). Oliver attacked him after Noah insulted his mother, and as a result of this, things complicated even more for him, so Oliver decided to escape on foot and he walked 70 miles until he got to London, where he met Jack Dawkins (The Artful Dodger), a thief who takes Oliver to their hideou, and where Oliver meets the leader Fagin. Oliver is offered to join the gang, and on his first adventure with them, two boys stole a man{s handkerchief and Oliver, being innocent, is proclaimed as guilty, but then an eyewitness declares that Oliver was innocent. The owner of the handkerchief (Mr. Brownlow) takes Oliver who had collapsed due to fever and takes care of him. He pretty much adopts Oliver and changed his clothes for new ones. Unfortunately, while doing an errand to Mr. Brownlow, Oliver is forcibly taken back to the gangster’s hideout by Fagin’s associate (Bill Sykes) and a prostitute whose name

Throughout the story the pattern of imagery used by Joseph Conrad would be seen in the early twentieth century of the corrupted London society. The story written by Conrad can be related back to the time error it was written in. This novel was written in an error where terrorist threats were becoming increasingly more popular. Joseph Conrad would commonly use two men as his main characters whom were both of the Russian Activist “fan club”. These men would be the focus of Joseph Conrad’s pieces.…
