An example, showing this article being in chronological order, is that when he is describing what is going on during the days devoted to the ancient Greek Olympic Games, he discusses and describes everything in order by the days that they will happen. In this article, William J. Baker covers a lot of history from the year 776 B.C., when the Olympic Games were started, to 350 B.C., where Baker states that “Not until about 350 B.C., was housing provided for the athletes, and even then it was too Spartan for comfort.” William J. Baker got his information from primary sources; such as, Socrates, Ancient philosophers, Milo of Crotan, the Republic, and Plato. (Article, pp.61, 65, 66)…

Since all of the wars between all the city-states ceased at the time of the games thousands of athletes would travel from all over Greece, places such as athens and sparta, to compete. Then when the Roman Empire conquered the Greeks, Rome allowed non-Greeks to compete. In the beginning only the rich completed because they were the ones with the time and money. Although it was eventually opened up to the poor, everyone who competed, competed for personal gain. When athletes won the games they would not only gain popularity and become something of a celebrity, but also a great deal of money and political power, often becoming diplomats and having significant influence in the government of the city-states.…

The Greeks' history began around 700 B.C. with festivals honoring their many gods. One god, Dionysus, was honored with an unusual festival called the City Dionysia. The revelry-filled festival was led by drunken men dressed up in rough goat skins (because goats were thought sexually potent) who would sing and play in choruses to welcome Dionysus. Tribes competed against one another in performances, and the best show would have the honor of winning the contest. Of the four festivals in Athens (each reflecting seasonal changes), plays were only presented at one festival--City Dionysia. Historians believe that the Greeks patterned their celebrations after the traditional Egyptian pageants honoring Osiris.…

The term “Olympians” comes from Mount Olympus, the gods’ mystical home, which is conceived as a high mountaintop but is really a magical place that exists on a heavenly plane—not the heavens (which Zeus alone rules), earth, sea, nor underworld. Shared by all the gods, Olympus is perfect. Rain never falls there, and the gods while away their time eating, drinking, and listening to music. There are twelve proper Olympians: Zeus; his two brothers, Poseidon and Hades; his two sisters, Hestia and Hera (who is also his wife); his children, Ares, Athena, Apollo, Hermes, and Artemis; and two gods sometimes considered his offspring, Hephaestus and Aphrodite.…

Because the Twelve Olympians are not totally clear, there are a possible fourteen gods and goddesses that could be classified as Olympians. The gods and goddesses all had their place in Ancient Greece and were either worshipped or hated because of their responsibilities and talents. The Greek Gods and Goddesses all had a great influence and importance to Greek culture.…
