Online Business Versus Physical Business
“You need customers. Without them, most organizations would cease to exist” - Customers do play a big significant role in businesses and consequently are the main reason for businesses’ existence. Customers are also needed to maintain the survival of a business, be it a sole trader, small medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), private limited companies, public limited companies and so on. All businesses aim to cater and accommodate their customers’ needs and wants so they will purchase the businesses’ products and services. I will be discussing the different features in an online and physical business with regards to start-up cost, marketing advertising and customers’ convenience.
In the early years, businesses’ has started from as a barter where exchange of commodities by coincidence of wants takes place rather than by the use money. Economically, in the modern world, money’s existence as a medium of exchange in the market has increasingly opened up foundations of outlets and stores, and even plantations for businesses to sell their products and services to their customers. This is also known as ‘physical businesses. It does take a lot of costs to open up a physical business, and there are significant number of factors to be considered, such as, location, the establishment of their products and services to the customers, rent, utility expenses, hiring and training employees, and so on. In contrast to this, online businesses retail their goods and services via e-commerce which does not involve in setting up a physical store, where customers can purchase products or services via online. Online businesses also tend to face lower operational costs from lower utility expenses, as well as fewer employees to be employed.

The history of ecommerce can be traced back to the invention of the very old notion of “sell and buy” computers, electricity, cables, modems as well as the internet. The first e-commerce transactions was started in March, 4, 1983 by Alex Randall, (YouTube, 2008) but people started using ecommerce in 1991, when the internet was opened for commercial use and since then, there have been thousands of businesses which put up their businesses at web sites. With the rapid growth of e-business it is no small wonder why businesses today are taking advantage of the online market. The overall convenience and lack of complexity with buying products and services online has converted most of the public to shopping via the internet. Any business that sells a service or product must strongly consider the fact that being without a website or means for the public to shop online will only hinder the business’ profits and any chance for future development. Many small businesses are realizing first hand that the lack of e-business will ultimately make their companies obsolete.…

The first key to starting a successful online business is to first understand ecommerce and how it operates. Most people understand that ecommerce or electronic commerce refers to the buying and selling of products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks. However, it stretches beyond just the buying and selling of goods; it also includes an online process of developing, marketing, selling, delivering, servicing and paying for products and services. “The use of commerce is conducted in this way, spurring and drawing on innovations in electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, internet marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange (EDI), inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems. Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web at least at one point in the transaction 's life-cycle, although it may encompass a wider range of technologies such as e-mail, mobile devices and telephones as well”. (Electronic Commerce, modified November 2011, Wikipedia). Today it is said to be over 29.7 billion pages on the World Wide Web. Ecommerce today has gained so much popularity because its core technologies are constantly evolving and keeping up with a technology based world. Each year the number of ecommerce deals grows tremendously. The sales volumes of on-line stores run in a more than comparable race with physical retail stores.…

The Internet has changed the way that we perceive business and the way that we as consumers may make our purchases. In fact, the online consumer today knows the convenience of purchasing a book online and having it delivered to their door in a matter of a few days. There is no more need to fight crowds, find a parking spot, and deal with traffic. The high street and mail order systems still have a place in the mix of purchase routes; however it is no longer the only method of making purchases. The Internet revolution has seen a massive increase in the long distance purchases made by consumers, as geographical barriers are no longer as important as they were. The lack of geographical importance has influenced the strategy of Internet companies. One of the first companies that took advantage of this was the online bookshop Amazon.com.…
