Opioid Crisis Case Study
My mother is from a small town called Richwood, Ohio which is located about forty-five minutes north of Columbus. This town and area have been affected significantly by the opioid crisis. Heroin has primarily been the main opioid used in this area. The town of Richwood has changed over the last five years or so. I visit this town in Ohio roughly three to four times a year. Comparing it from the years when I grew up to now you can see a very evident difference mainly in the local economy. The town has seen a car dealership close down after over thirty-five years of existence called Mills Chevrolet and Pontiac (T2Buck.com 2009). Other businesses include the Cardinal grocery store located in Richwood. The decline of these small businesses has taken a toll on the local economy. However, many people in the area are known farmers. This industry has essentially kept this city alive. A business in Richwood called Parrot Implement Company provides farming equipment to the residents of Richwood and the surrounding area. This business thrives in this environment which has become a solid local source of employment in different fashions. While other businesses thrive in Richwood, the closing of some has led people to take an …show more content…
Many people are starting to realize how significant of a problem this is. Various projects to attempt to solve this issue have been mandated. However, It is still harming many people's lives and is not showing any sign of slowing down. The rate of overdoses in Ohio is steadily increasing over the past five to ten years. This problem is not only affecting the people that are perishing from it, but the family and life they leave behind is forever damaged in an unrepairable form. Being able to take a project like this first hand could provide results that could save a countless amount of lives, keep families together, and harm the distributors of these illegal

CDC developed and published this guideline to provide recommendations for the prescribing of opioid pain medication for adult patients in primary care settings. Recommendations focus on the use of opioids in treating chronic pain (pain lasting longer than 3 months or past the time of normal tissue healing) outside of active cancer treatment, palliative care and end-of–life care. Improving the way opioids are prescribed through clinical practice guidelines can ensure patients have access to safer, more effective chronic pain treatment while reducing the number of people who misuse, abuse or overdose from these drugs.…

There is also a need in the manner in which law enforcement manages drugs and drug enforcement. This can be handled by making drugs a public health problem instead of a criminal one (Lozoff, n.d.). This can shift a majority of the drug problem onto other services and by decriminalizing drug use and possession individuals can get treatment instead of being locked up for a mental health and addiction problem. This would alleviate overbooked court rooms and prisons allowing for the truly violent and dangerous criminals to be placed in space that is taken up by less violent offenders (Lozoff, n.d.). In changing the way the system manages drugs and drug addicts the crimes associated with drug use can also be decreased or eliminated (Chandler, Fletcher, & Volkow,…

When people hear the term opiate abusers or the more frequently used street term drug addict (a horrible stereotype) that people think of first. A homeless, system milking, degenerate that is hooked on Heroin and sticks dirty needles in their arms, doing anything for money to get more drugs. Although many times that is where drug addiction can eventually lead a person, it doesn’t start that way. It starts in high school at a party or the soccer mom that hurts her back and got addicted to the Percocet’s she was prescribed…

As if teaching our youth about the dangers of drugs isn’t hard enough, now we have company’s manufacturing a synthetic form of Marijuana, commonly referred to as “Spice” or “K-2”. These company’s target our youth by packaging it colorful, shiny packets and giving “cool” names like “magic monkey” or “purple passion”. They label these packages “herbal incense” and “not for human consumption” in an attempt to hide its intended use and avoid FDA regulations, yet for one package containing 5 grams it costs on average $15.99-$21.99. That’s pretty expensive for an “air freshener”. In 2011, 14.4 percent of 12 graders admitted to experimenting with synthetic marijuana. Just last March, 16 year old honor student, and star soccer player from Fayette County, Ga. Chase Burnett died shortly after experimenting with this drug. This had law makers act quick and enact “Chases Law” , Georgia House Bill 370, which made this drug a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance and a felony to purchase, possess and distribute any form of this substance. Once this bill was signed by Gov. Nathan Deal, it took about 24 hours for police agencies, mine being one, to conduct search warrants all over metro Atlanta to get this deadly drug off the shelves.…

Lawmakers have created a joint House-Senate committee to construct an attack plan. A special police unit has been established and communities are holding meetings and anti-drug rallies. I believe that the answer to solving this problem lies in the Portuguese. The country had dealt with their drug problem by locking up or finding the dealers. Anybody caught with less than 10 days worth can either face treatment, a small fine, or no punishment. Most people get referred to a counseling. This system has been successfully in Portugal and has brought drug use and the rate of drug-related death down overall. Unfortunately, no US state has tried this style of eliminating drugs before. It could help the state of Hawaii drop the use of drugs just like it did for the…

In our society drugs and the people involved with drugs are a major issue. People who use drugs or sell drugs tend to do outrageous things to get the drugs or to make money off selling drugs. I believe that these type of people are endangering others in their lives, their community and even the world. I came up with a brilliant solution to stop their outrageous antics. I feel that the addiction of most drug attics will never stop. We will never get rid of drugs but, we can get rid of the people involved with drugs. All drug influenced people should be moved to their own country.…

Since the mid 1900’s, heroin has been an epidemic in the United States. Heroin overdoses are one of the leading causes of deaths among all narcotics, and in 2003, people in Vancouver, Canada decided to try and make a difference. A safe heroin injection site is “a legally sanctioned medically supervised facility designed to reduce nuisance from public drug use and provide a hygienic and stress free environment in which individuals are able to consume illicit drugs intravenously” (“Supervised Injection Site” 1). One of these sites was installed in Vancouver and the amount of heroin involved deaths has gone down immensely. Safe injection sites could potentially lower the amount of annual heroin involved overdoses and deaths in Washington state due to on site medical supervision, providing clean needles to reduce the…

Drug addiction is a severe social problem. However, it is a treatable chronic disease which can be successfully managed by combining behavioural therapy with medications. In all medication treatment, we focus on the possible addiction treatments for those opioid addicts refractory to existing treatments. Opioid dependence is usually displayed as heroin dependence. Methadone has been shown to reduce opioid dependence with a high availability and acceptance. However, about a quarter or slightly less of patients do not improve and cannot give up illegal heroin entirely. As a result, they will be exposed to a situation that present risks to their health and lead to social exclusion. Although available clinical evidence on prescribed diacetylmorphine…

Since 2001, Narcan has saved more than 10,000 lives and continues to do so to this day (“U.S Heroin Crisis”). As time goes on, the government adds funds to an ever growing war against drugs and enacts more laws against drug abuse; that does nothing to stop the numbers from growing. The government focuses more on the punishment a user should get rather than the help they should seek after an overdose. Many argue that if an addict is found overdosed they should be punished for drug possession or left for dead. What good would any of that do but add the emotional and financial cost of that on their families? Addiction is considered a chronic condition by many around the country and, in the end, these addicts do not sit around saying, “I want to be addicted to this, and ruin my life for the sake of a high”. If these addicts are found overdosed they should not have to worry about being punished horribly for something that they hate as much as a nonuser. These people should worry about their treatment, which is why many lawmakers are considering good samaritan laws. These laws protect overdose victims from punishment and provides them with medical help for their addiction. Another good turn the government has taken is the addition of specialized drug courts where those with drug offenses are brought to get help for their problem. This…

If one traveled through the small quiet community of Monroe, MI you would probably never think that this town has a drug problem. From the outside it seems like a nice middle class suburb that might be ideal to raise a family. For those that reside here however, they know that there is a growing problem. There aren’t many families that haven’t been affected by heroin addiction in this small town. The drug has literally swept through this county like an angry mob of rioters bringing crime, death, and destruction with it, leaving many people in the community asking, “Why?”…

Over 25,000 people in America died from the overdose of prescription drugs in just 2014! We need to fix this huge problem facing America. This is ruining the country! Upon learning that there would be a new opiate addiction treatment facility in my neighborhood, I was decidedly thrilled that steps were being taken to aid those in need. I find it extremely noble that the drug, alcohol, and mental health board is doing something to help those addicted to opiates. While I understand that some people may be concerned with the kind of reputation that a rehab center may bring to a community, I fully believe that the treatment center will be an excellent way to show that we care and want to help our fellow citizens. What town doesn’t want to say that they help their own? Are we suddenly too important to help those in need? Just because we may not have gotten sucked into the world of drugs ourselves, we are certainly not above helping those who have.…
