According to Abraham Lincoln, “Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth.”
Because I agree with this statement, I seek support of today’s resolution: RESOLVED, that an oppressive government is more desirable than no government.
For the purposes of today’s debate, I offer the following definitions from Merriam Webster:
Government, “a particular system used for controlling a country, state, etc.”
Control, “to exercise restraining or directing influence over; Regulate.”
Desirable, “worth seeking or doing as advantageous, beneficial, or wise.”
And this definition from The Social Work Dictionary:
Oppression, "The social act of placing severe restrictions on an individual or group.”

It doesn’t mean providing for the general welfare, it means it is for the people that it governs, which is just to say that it isn’t for anyone who is not a part of that system. By the people, for the people, just means that its laws and power are solely for those who have a hand in creating it.
