Gender roles and stereotypes have existed since the beginning of time. Universally, women struggled to prove their way in a “man’s world.” In the movies Citizen Kane and Network the struggle for women is evident. In Kane the news staff is almost entirely men. In Network, the character of Diana Christensen is a head strong, determined, programmer who was willing to the do what she needed to succeed. Though these movies are fictional, the struggle for women is real. Oprah Winfrey is one the world’s most influential women. The world of women’s magazines is competitive and most magazine fail to survive the pressure. O Magazine was not fazed a bit. O Magazine began producing profit only five years after its original publication. Oprah says, “I truly believe, that the reason I’ve been able to be so financially successful is because my focus has never, ever for one minute been money.” One of the main things that helped Oprah overcome the gender biases from society was her passion. Oprah believed that if you genuinely wanted something and you were willing to do what needed to be done to accomplish it then the rest would fall into place. If there was any note that needed to be given to young females it is that you can do anything if you are willing to work to achieve it. Oprah would be the perfect role model for young women who are looking to be successful but have not been especially blessed throughout their lives. Oprah lived a tough childhood and overcame drug use, rape, sexual harassment, racial stereotypes, and gender biases. She has made a name for herself entirely through her own doing. She showed society that change is possible and with hard work, determination, and passion anything is possible. Young women may take the drive to chase a dream from Oprah.
