In general, a team is defined by Oxford Dictionary as two or more people working together. According to Julie Garland, “a working team is usually a small, cohesive group operating within a larger organization and responsible for carrying out a particular task. Working in a team can be a threat as well as an opportunity. In order to achieve a specified objective in an organization, team members must work co-operatively, take initiative to get things done and be supportive to generate synergy in a team. On the other hand, a team might not work out efficiently if problems such as leeching and conflicts occur regularly. In short, a team must work together as a whole to be successful.
Stages of Development
The first stage of group development is the forming stage. At this stage, we first met each other and are uncertain about what to do. An ice breaking session was conducted by our lecturer Ms ….., we were required to introduce a student whose birthday is the nearest to us. From this activity, we get to know more about our group members. After the ice breaking session, we were asked to sit in a big circle and were given a task of producing a project team showcase. The whole class was required to work in a big group to develop a product or service. This is very new for us as we never work in such a big group of 25 students. Soon, we voted Ivanna as our group leader.
Norming
After the storming stage, the team proceeded to the norming stage. At this stage, some peacemakers in our team successfully resolved most conflicts. They realize how vital teamwork and liaison are for the group to work efficiently. Conflicts in teams can break synergy and harmony in the group. For example, the issue of absentees was solved. We decided that marks for this assignment would be given according to their level of contribution as well as attendance.
