This paper will provide a brief overview of L-3 Communication’s SWOT analysis, strategic, and operational plans that will enable the corporation to achieve its strategic and operational goals. This paper will identify strategic and operational plans for the specific strategic goal of technical and market leadership, and the operational goal of quality as the standard by which performance is measured
L-3 is currently experiencing strong inorganic growth through the acquisition of competing technologies. Its strengths include a diversified product portfolio and strong inorganic growth. L-3s weaknesses include an over-dependence on the US market, unfunded post retirement benefit plan obligations, and weak financial performance. L-3 has opportunities in new contract growth, increasing defense spending in China and India as well as a robust order backlog. (“L-3 Communications Holdings, Inc.,“ 2013, p.26)
In order to achieve L-3s long-term strategic goal of technical and market leadership L-3 must also foster an environment of innovation within its existing assets while using acquisition of competing technologies to further push the technological envelope.
As a means of achieving the strategic goal of technical and market leadership L-3 will implement the following organizational restructuring activities: Business Units (BUs) responsible for product development will transform from divisional structure to a more internal functional, organic structure while maintaining the divisional reporting hierarchy. Business units will provide corporate a business unit restructuring plan NLT 30 days post the date of this announcement. Business unit plans will include the formation innovation cells staffed with cross functional personnel from organic assets. These teams will be responsible for pushing the technological envelope, discovering new ways of doing things, thinking in new and innovative ways and enhancing existing technology products.
