The subject about the original creation of the earth has been argued for a couple centuries. There are many theories and beliefs that contradict each other on creation. The purpose of this article is to discuss and compare the difference between the old-earth and the young-earth theories and there different viewpoints. The old-earth is based on a secular and Christian view and the young-earth is based on a Christian view built on the Bible in Genesis. Young-earth was the main belief until the late 1700’s when French scientists concluded that the world begin from …show more content…
a collision. Later in the early 19th century the idea old earth was developed and has grown from there.
Old-earth creationism is a term used for people that believe God created the earth over a long period of time instead of just six 24hr days and was not created in the past 6,000 to 10,000 years but rather billions of years ago. Many Christian and none Christians believe this theory of creation. It is made up of both secular and Christian views mixed in one theory. Old-Earth agrees with the scientific age of the earth and humanity but rejects the modern day evolution of the earth being created without a creator. In Exodus Moses writes “For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day” (Exodus 20:11a). Old-earth creationism takes this out of literation and believes in something called overlapping days. Overlapping days are not the day that we know today but rather a long period of time in each day. Some say this took thousands of years and others say millions.
The young-earth creationism is the belief that our earth was created from nothing into the world we know today within a time period of six days around 6,000 years ago. They base dovi ii their belief on the book of Genesis in a literal sense.
In this book of the Bible it states “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in their entire vast array” (Genesis 1:34, 2:1). Young-earth creationists base their beliefs on Genesis, by reading the context in a literal manner. Many argue that the word "day" means "long age," point out that the Hebrew word, yom, can have a number of meanings, only one of which is "day of 24 hours." Many scholars believe this is the correct translation of Genesis but still are not in agreement between these two beliefs of the Bible.
These two theories or beliefs are the opposite from each other but still have some things in common. One thing they have in common is that they both believe there is a creator. This question has been argued time after time again and will continue to be discussed. Another thing that is similar in old and young-earth view is they are both based off of Genesis. It’s sometimes hard to grasp that everyone sees the same thing but believe something totally different. Many old earth creationists admit to having a personal relationship with Jesus, but they believe God should be left out of …show more content…
science. These two beliefs have some many differences. One of the differences is that young-earth takes Genesis literally which is different from Old-earth because it does not. What we believe lies with our interpretation of the Scripture. Many argue that most of the Bible can’t be taken literally, which causes them to question the literary context of Genesis. So we base it all on our interpretation. Another difference is that young-earth creationism believes that the earth was created about 6,000 years ago while old-earth creationism believes that the dovi iii earth was created billions of years ago. Young-earth scientists calculate when Adam was created and estimate about 2,000 it to be 2,000 years before Abraham. Christians and non-Christian scholars believe that Abraham lived about 2,000 years B.C. placing the Earth’s age at around 4,000 B.C. which would be around 6,000 years ago today. On the other hand, old-earth creationism bases the earths age mainly from the Grand Cannon dating the Rocks several billion years old. This subject has been debated for many years and will continue many more years.
The purpose of my writings was to compare and contrast between the two beliefs and how they conclude to what is true or not. Old-earth follows both Christian views and secular views and young-earth believes in what the Bible tells us is true. Many Christians believe in old-earth and do not think that God has the power to create the earth in just 6 days. The prophet Hosea tells us God’s teachings saying “my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). My personal opinion is that God did create the world in 6 days only a few thousand years ago. Although it is more logical to believe in old-earth and that it took God a long period of time to create the earth. It takes away from His glory and power. Whether you believe in old-earth or young-earth there is one thing correct, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Geneses
1:1).
