ARTICLE CRITIQUE
Guidelines for Research Critique
A. Research Problem
1. What is the major research problem identified in the study? Is the problem clearly stated?
2. What is the author(s) justification for conducting the study (i.e., why is it important)?
3. What is/are the purpose(s) of the study?
4. Is the selection of a quantitative approach instead of a qualitative approach justified?
5. Is there a theoretical basis for the study? If yes, briefly describe the theory. Is the theory stated clearly?
6. What is (are) the research question(s), objective(s) or hypotheses?
7. If there is a theoretical basis for the study, what is the relationship between the theory and the research questions, …show more content…
Is there evidence that the measures used were valid? Explain.
4. Is there evidence that the measures used were reliable? Explain.
C. Research Design
1. What specific research design(s) did the author(s) use?
2. Are there threats to internal and external validity? If yes, discuss.
D. Sampling
1. What is the population that the authors wanted to study (i.e., target population)?
2. Does the population (i.e., sampling frame) from which the sample was taken represent all of the appropriate people?
3. What type of sampling technique was used?
4. What are the implications of this sampling technique for the findings?
5. Are there issues with external validity (i.e., generalizability)?
E. Data collection
1. What type of data collection method(s) did the researcher(s) use?
2. What are the advantages and disadvantaged of that data collection method(s) used?
F. Results
1. What are the major results/findings of the study?
2. How do these results 'fit' with the original research question(s), objective(s), or hypotheses?
3. How confident are you with the findings? NOTE: Consider your previous findings regarding measurement, sampling, design and other possible threats to internal and external
