Osmosis And Diffusion Lab
The results that were collected in lab #1 shows the relationship of surface areand volume in the artificial cells to the diffusion rate using the phenolphthalein-NaOH agar and the HCl solution. Lab #2 was a model of diffusion and osmosis, in which we filled the model cells with different solutions and determined the rate of diffusion. In lab #3, the results demonstrated the interactions between selectively permeable membranes, water, and solutes and how they are important in cellular and organismal functions. In lab #1, the results showed the diffusion rate between the certain time period of 29minutes and 47 seconds, and how the phenolphthalein dye diffused out of the agar. This lab obviously exposed the diffusion and osmosis process. For example, the cell in the red colored solution showed the most difference in weight before and after with a difference of 1.2g. The cell in the blue solution showed the least amount difference before and after with only a 0.1g difference. Lab #3 showed observation of osmosis and the difference of weight in (g) each living cell had before and after it was placed in a solution. In this experiment, the glass bead was the control and showed no difference in weight, since it’s not a living tissue and doesn’t contain any living cells .The weight of the glass beads stayed constant at 0.3g throughout the whole experiment. The peanuts weight increased after it was removed from the solution as expected. However, the apples and potatoes had increases and decreases of weight. For example, the apple slice that weighed 2.4g before placed in the red solution, came out to be 2.0g after being removed from the solution.     Diffusion and Osmosis are two concepts that go hand in hand with each other. Diffusion is simply described as the movement of a substance from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. In another words, the substance will move down its concentration gradient which is “the region along which the density of a chemical substance increases or decreases” (Campbell Biology pg. 132). If you understand the concept of diffusion then osmosis is a very simple process. It can be defined as the diffusion of water across a permeable membrane. The second experiment proved different solute concentrations affect the movement of water, depending on the solute concentration inside the cell.
