In this essay I am going to be looking into and assessing possible influences on an individual’s diet, how this affects their health and then making recommendations to minimise the negative influences. I’m going to be looking at 4 separate case studies to do this with.
Case study 1:
A diabetic 83 year old man called Jim, lives on his own and has very poor eating habits. He refuses to change his ways of eating as that’s what he’s eaten his whole life and is too stubborn to change as he feels it’ll be allowing for his diabetes to take over his life. He’s retired and lives alone as his wife recently died, he doesn’t get out the house much, mainly sitting in his chair listening to old music and eating. Jim lives a minimum half hour drive away from his family, but he no longer has a car as he didn’t feel he used it enough therefore he sold it so he can’t travel to them. His family visit him occasionally but they have jobs and their own lives to run, so Jim brushes off any concerns they have for him and his eating habits because he doesn’t want to add more to their plates and he is too proud to admit it. He never leant to cook as his wife done all the cooking, he has plenty of money and not many people to spend it on so he doesn’t think twice before ordering a takeaway. The policy to help Jim could be Change 4 life, as it demonstrates simple changes that can be made which have a positive impact on health.
Because he doesn’t have anyone to regularly visit him or take care of him, ensuring he eats better and teaching him how to cook his habits are showing no signs of improving, both because he doesn’t know how and he doesn’t want to. He is still mourning his wife and will very often use food as a distraction and a comfort. It is very likely he’ll develop heart disease or have a stroke if he continues on his fatty and sugary diet but he is unaware of quite how much his diet is affecting his health. He has plenty of money which is a positive as he can
