The sledge knocked in the hill and Jonas was jarred loose and thrown violently into the air. He fell with his leg twisted under him while he could hear the crack of his bone. His face scraped along sharp edges of ice when he lay shocked with fear. Then he felt the first wave of pain. It was like a hatchet lay lodged in his leg, cutting through each nerve with a hot blade. He tried to move but couldn’t because the pain grew. He screamed and turned his head and vomited on to the frozen snow.
2. Why do you think The Giver ends each training session with color-filled memories of pleasure? To relief Jonas of pain
3. “The memories give us wisdom” (p.111). Do you agree or disagree?
Justify your answer! I completely agree. Memory is a result of experience. Different experiences lead me in my life for any situation which I face. It avoids me of repeating mistakes too.
4. Why can’t everyone have the memories? Memories come with pain, so they decided not to have it.
5. How do YOU suggest Jonas and The Giver change the community so that everyone can have the memories? How would you convince the Committee of Elders to change their minds? I suggest that they share some of the good memories with everyone to let them feel a real sense of happiness in their life. However, as a Giver/Receiver can still hold the responsibility to control the community. If the committee of Elder find out that it would be possible for them to secure the community even by sharing some of good memories, they will accept.
