The Outsiders was written by S.E. Hinton about the battle between the Greasers and the Socs. ”Mother to Son” is a poem by Langston Hughes about a mother giving advice to her son about life. But, both S.E. Hinton and Langston Hughes had similar ideas when they wrote the book and poem.
The Outsiders is about the battle between the Greasers and the Socs. The Socs are the snobby rich kids that live a high society life style and consider the Greasers sewer scum. Greasers are the tough low class group that have pretty rough life styles and think that the Socs are a bunch of idiots that complain too much. Along with the battle between the Greasers and the Socs the book also tells the life struggles of Ponyboy Curtis a young Greaser. Ponyboy struggles with the death of his parents, a murder, and the death of his best friend, but instead of giving up and Ponyboy tries go on with his life.
“Mother to Son” is about an African American woman telling her son about her struggles in life as advice. She says “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair,” saying that life for her hasn’t been easy. At the end of the poem she says “So boy don’t you turn back. Don’t you set down on the steps ‘cause you find it kinder hard don’t you fall now for I’se still goin’ honey I’se still climbin’ and life for me ain’t been no crystal stair,” which means don’t give up because life is hard but you still have to try
“Mother to Son” or The Outsiders they both have the same theme. When Jhonny dies Ponyboy tries to go with his life and tries not thinking about it. The woman in the poem tries to push on through her life when she comes to obstacles. In both the book and poem when they come to obstacles they keel trying to go on with
