Description
On Thursday 17th August I was on an emergency ambulance service placement. The paramedic crew and I responded to an unwell female. When we arrived the patient was on a couch surrounded by her partner and extended family. The paramedic asked for some privacy however the family refused. Her boyfriend was very emotional and protective of her. He appeared very tense and remained in a clenched state throughout the job. This made me very uncomfortable and led to problems when we had to ask private questions or provide treatment.
Reflection
This job made me very nervous. I was unsure of how the patients’ partner would react to the situation. I also felt a sense of unease as we had to ask questions about recent sexual activity and other private information in front of other family members. As a result of my uneasiness I believed I would make the situation worse. Instead of trying to handle a situation I was uncomfortable with, I asked the experienced paramedic to take the lead on the job. By having the paramedic take the lead I was able to be a little more comfortable with the event. As the paramedic was leading the job, I was able to see the approach that he took. Although I know that it is inappropriate to judge people based upon their living situation, I could not prevent myself from doing so. An influencing factor in my unease would originate from my reluctance to talk about private information in front of family members. Due to the family members not wanting to leave the room I imagined myself in that position which made me uncomfortable. I believe my choice in asking the paramedic to take the lead resulted in the best outcome. However if had been more experienced I may have been able to manage on my
