I interviewed Emily whose son Max has cerebral palsy.
Q: When did you notice that Max needed Early Intervention services? A: I don’t want to get into too much detail but long story short is I had a very complicated delivery. I have two older sons and I noticed that Max was different than his older brothers were when they were babies. I started to notice some physical delays. Max wasn’t holding his head up and he wasn’t crawling. When I talked to Max’s doctors they told me to stop comparing Max to his older brothers and to stop worrying. However, I knew something was wrong. I listened to my inner voice and called an early intervention center. Max was tested when he was 6 months old and he qualified for services.

One time one of the therapists was over and it was a sunny day. The blinds were open and I guess the sun went in his eyes and his eyes did something funny. The therapist started to get nervous and told me that there could be a neurological problem. I started to freak out and I remember calling my husband crying. We took Max to the doctor right away and it turned out to be nothing, just the sun got in his eye. I know the therapist was being cautious but as a mother, when your son has cerebral palsy you get very nervous out when you hear news like that. I think the therapist could have been more sensitive in that moment.
Q: Do you have any advice for therapists when dealing with families?
A: I think the most important thing is to be sensitive to the family. It is a very intimidating and hard time for the family and I think it is important therapists remember that. I think it is also important for therapists not to make the parents fearful but rather support them. The therapists should get to know the child and make the child feel comfortable. I think the therapists should educate the parents and teach the parents how they can further help their child. They should help parents do everything they can for their child. Also, become part of the
