Alike (Adepero Oduye), is a 17 years old intelligent student that is starting to explore her sexuality like most teens of that age normally do. She seems to be quite confident in the fact that she is attracted to women. However, she doesn’t know how to exactly go about this and decides to enlist the help of her friend Laura (Pernell Walker). Laura, on the other hand, is an older teenager who has come to entirely embrace her sexual orientation and is quite confident in it.
Alike’s mother (Kim Wayans) is uncomfortable with Alike’s apparent sexual orientation and starts looking for ways to repress it. She starts by attempting to cut ties between Alike and Laura by finding Alike a new friend named Bina. She also attempts to continually police Alike’s dressing so it appears womanly. These attempts end up being futile. Alike changes her clothes into the boyish one she is more comfortable on her way to school. Besides, after hanging around Bina for a while, Alike ends up having sex with Bina. Her performance gives us a great insight into who her character is and the troubles she is facing. Walker also does an equally amazing job by executing a very tom-boyish look/character that most people would expect of lesbians. The movie was set in Brooklyn New York, and the cinematography and imagery vividly depicts the environment such that it constitutes an experience for the audience.
