Marta Mendoza’s story makes us reflect and recognize the problem regarding what is happening in this society. While I'll never be in favor of abortion or deliberately removing the life of another human being, I am in favor of that every woman should be offered the opportunity to choose what is best for her and have a choice to do so. I do not understand how in such advanced society and in a first
world country, we still have to deal with situations such as the author narrates. What happened to her was simply unacceptable, a procedure such as D&E should have been made by general physicians or gynecologists and hospitals should be prepared for this kind of situations. Doctors should not be penalized by law when performing such procedure when they understand it is the only option patient have without compromising their well-being. .Why it is that health care in this country can’t be prepared to help women by making these procedures more easily available? The government should play a big role in making sure laws are in place so this never happen! Endangering the life of a person who was far from committing a crime but instead had to go through one of the most difficult situations a woman can face. As a woman that are trying to conceive, my heart feels so heavy and angry.
According to the author, “dilatation and extraction” procedure known as D&E, involves removing a larger fetus from the womb, sometimes in pieces (Mendonza, 2014, p.624). In Marta’s case, she spent over four days with bleeding and a dead fetus in her body. All this ordeal could have been avoiding if proper laws were in place, helping minimize her trauma. Women should have the right to protect their body from having better access to this type of procedures when needed.
