Medical information and support groups found on the Internet, are a great asset in educating and motivating patients toward better health nowadays and have led to many physicians and therapist question their traditional role as the most trusted counselors. However each patient is unique and a doctor because of his superior knowledge and experience still plays a major role in the patient’s life. So having a good communication relationship will foster better healing.

Respect different cultures and different languages spoken. Where needed provide patients with interpreters. You should make an attempt to understand the patient. Avoid racial, cultural differences while interacting with patients. Be aware of their cultural rules or enquire before you begin treating the patient. This helps to develop a better patient therapist communication relationship.
6. Use open ended questions and non-directed questions that cannot be answered by just ‘yes/no’. This helps the patients reflect theirs problems clearly.
7. Read the nonverbal cues of the patient to understand if the patient is following/understanding the instructions given by the health care professional. The therapist should not use too many hand gestures while explaining the patients. Try to use images or facts to help them get a better picture of their condition.
8. If the patient asks for any detailed explanation of the rehabilitation outcome/medical condition provide them with one. Keep the patient well aware about all the possible situations and outcomes expected in the therapy session. Provide full disclosure. Ask the patients to repeat the instructions in their own words to demonstrate that they have understood all the instructions clearly.
