Patricia Smith America's Choice Analysis
“America’s Choice” Phasebook by Frank Sacco P4 9/6/16 In Patricia Smith’s article, “America’s Choice”, from Junior Scholastic, Smith explains the current state of the 2016 United States presidential election.

The election had surprises for both sides. On the Republican side most people were surprised Donald Trump was elected Republican Nominee. On the Democratic side, everyone was surprised on how long it took for Hillary Clinton to beat the unknown senator Bernie Sanders. These two are the exact opposites. Trump believes that we should build a wall between Mexico and the United States, and Mexico will pay the bill. He also says that he will temporarily ban Muslim immigrants from certain countries. Clinton, on the other hand,

Whether it is about taxes, spending, the bailouts, the debt ceiling or entitlements, a fundamental source of disagreement between Republicans and Democrats is whether the federal government should be a support system for the country or play an extremely limited role in business, social and day-to-day life. The tea party wing of the Republican party has used reducing the size of government as a rallying cry while progressive Democrats decry it as an elimination of the traditional safety net responsibilities of the federal government.…

As George Washington retired from his presidential position in 1796, he left a grim reminder to the people of the newly independent United States of America: the independence of states, peace at home and abroad, safety, prosperity, and liberty are all dependent upon the unity between states. To promote the national strength, he urges the people to place their identity as Americans above those of their state, region, and interests. In fear of the impeding sectionalism, Washington included a fair warning to the people of the United States, the dangers of political parties to the government and the country as a whole. The idea of political parties, although warned thoroughly by our very first president, continuously solidified itself into the core of American government until it has become two standing pillars of modern politics: the Democratic Mules and its counterpart, the Republican Elephants. In 21st century politics, these two reigning parties, both having changed and altered their focus over time, have maintained a core value system, ideas beliefs, and key constituencies, which are made apparent throughout political campaigns; no better evidence than the 2012 political party platforms articulates the political position which each party represents.…

The Electoral College is an institution that may have served a purpose 200 years ago when the founding fathers needed a system that would be met with approval by both large and small states. The Electoral College is a flawed method of electing our President that has created problems in previous elections and is likely to be the source of problems in the future. The Electoral College provides an undemocratic method of choosing our president that potentially undermines the will of the voters. Not only can a candidate be elected without actually winning the most votes, it puts our elections at the mercy of electors who don't always cast their vote as pledged. I intend to demonstrate that the problems inherent in this voting method far outweigh any benefits it may provide. Replacing the winner-take-all method of awarding electoral votes with a system such as proportional representation or eliminating the college altogether in favor of direct election is the best way to ensure a trouble-free and fair election…

We finally realize many of our own insecurities have been mirrored by our projection of the need for a strong, powerful woman in the White House. However, we cannot longer accept the scheming, conniving, and cut throat desire for Hilary to win at all costs. We honor the fact that inadvertent harm has entered at stage three. “We don’t live wholly at any moment in the fourth stage or the fifth stage or any stage; we are in all five stages simultaneously, as we send out or receive back various rejected qualities, projected substance, abandoned powers, each absent in different degrees, or retrievable with different schedules. The United States of America is the world’s largest democracy. Every four years they hold presidential elections in which the public is to determine by vote who wins. The American people through decision and judgment cast out there vote to who they believe is the best person to lead their country. They must base their decision on what they see through media reports on television, newspapers and what they hear on the radio and from fellow citizens. The decision in the end is made through the influences of the 4 ways of knowing: emotion, language, perception and reason. Emotion is a key way of knowing as it forms the ground base for weather they like the candidate or not. Language and reason form the base of the decision as they convey the aims of each candidate through the reasons they give and the language they use to present those reasons. They perceive how the candidates take action in their campaign and in the debates to guide themselves to what they think is the right decision.…

With the current presidential race underway, a certain level of political segregation is brought to light. While Republican candidates volley vigorously on ideas such as a flat tax rate and the termination of Planned Parenthood, Democratic nominees have no other option but to support the contrasting opinions of a graduated tax and the continual funding of Planned Parenthood. Political parties hold steadfast to their viewpoints, which are not to be shared by the opposing faction. Presidential candidate, Donald Trump, envisions a starkly different America, than that envisioned by Bernie Sanders. There is no middle ground. As voting american citizens, we must give our support to one vision or another. There is no flexibility in our voice. Naturally…
