For example, with a mainly white university campus acting as our social institution, a Chicano/a student's ability to maintain academic achievement without letting their individual barriers and struggles affect them would be the result of having strong navigational capital. Besides students, this also applies to adults and their personal affairs which can include individual, family, community, and work factors. For example, Mexican immigrants, who come to the U.S., who have to maneuver through new institutions, that are centered around white middle class folks, develop navigational capital. In these cases, it can also be described as inner resources dwelling from their cultural background that help, not only to get by, but to thrive and exceed their expected expectations. This capital can help to navigate social institutions such as the job market, health care system, and the judicial system, to name a few, but can be applied to any single institution that creates an uneven playing field for Chicanos/as (Yosso 2006). Overall this branch can benefit the individual in an institution that is formed on race, and continues to work against them, while still drawing from their own backgrounds of lesser opportunities.…
However, I don’t believe that academics are the only factor that contributes to preparing a student for the real world. Extracurricular activities such as sports, also contribute in preparing students to thrive in the real world. College sports can teach students significant life skills such as how to deal…
The Civil War was the bloodiest war the United States has ever fought - killing over 620,000 Americans and causing more destruction than any other war. Long standing conflicts and disagreements made the violent war seem inevitable years before it happened, and led to it becoming a major turning point in US history. Americans have struggled with sectionalism since the colonial days, as seen in the issue of slavery and states rights, and the passing of documents and compromises such as the Articles of Confederation in an attempt to unify the colonies. During the period around the Civil War, the universal idea of manifest destiny reignited sectionalism between states because of arguments over whether to admit new lands in the West as slave or…

Although these facts came as a shock to me, they also piqued my interest. Because much of my growth can be attributed to the extracurricular activities I have invested myself in, I cannot imagine myself without the demanding cross country practices, or the baked goods I sell to raise funds for Relay for Life, or the Gwinnett Student Leadership Team seminars that my peers and I plan for our school. Although, at times, I become more stressed with the extra demands of my club activities, the fruitful results allow me to relax as my efforts become tangible. By running, baking and socializing, I was able to briefly escape the academic pressures put on me by…
The most significant extracurricular activity that I participate in would most likely be track and field during the indoor and outdoor seasons. I maintain a paid job and also help out at the local library, yet my experience as an athlete for Exeter High School has instilled within me invaluable time management skills, work ethic, and determination. Lettering all previous years I have competed, and being elected the team’s most valuable player last year, I work extremely hard on and off the track to achieve my goals. Balancing training with school can be difficult at times, but in a way I seem to work better having more on my plate. Receiving the scholar athlete award every consecutive season since sophomore year goes to show my greatly improved…
One extracurricular activity that I am extremely proud of is my involvement in Key Club International. If you may not know, no, Key Club does not make actual keys despite its name. Key Club is an international level service organization that helps provide opportunities for service to high school students. I started off in this club as just a member and honestly, I only joined because people had told me that it looked impressive on college applications. As I grew increasingly involved in the club, I began to realize that I loved serving my community. Giving back to a town that had allowed me numerous opportunities seemed only natural. I wanted to be involved in the organization as I could, and the fact that KCI is a student-run organization…
From a young age we’re asked what we want to be when we grow up, never how we expect to become when we grow up. I was well aware of what I wanted to become, but not sure how to get there until I started high school when my counselor explained to me the importance of having a full portfolio with a wide range of extracurricular activities. Then it became clear to me, I needed extracurricular activities to become who I wished to be. Throughout my high school career I’ve participated in several extracurricular actives such as math club, soccer and UIL One Act. In the future, I want to participate in these activities or anything similar to those I participated in high school.…
