“You whined like a wounded kitten,” said Perceval.
The men broke off and argued about which of them had been the most unmanly at one time or another, but Perceval found the squabble soothing. They were home and returning to their old ways, egging on one another, poking fun, and exchanging harmless chaff. It was how they bonded, and it was easier than saying: “I love you, brother,” though the meaning was the same.
Will and Mary came by bearing tankards of ale and handing them out, which stopped the lighthearted squabble.

It was well after sunset when the festivities broke up. Perceval’s bones ached with fatigue, but he had not lain with his wife in months, and if Joan was willing, he wanted the chance to cherish every part of her.
After Joan settled Percy in his new bed with tall sides, she all but assaulted Perceval, tearing off his clothes, shoving him into bed, and drawing the privacy curtains.
“I must confess, I had a little help coping with my needs while you were gone,” she said, and Perceval’s stomach dropped. If she was about to confess her faithlessness, he could not bear it.
“Goodness, you turned milk-white! Not that kind of help. I have, well, Kiena and Helena gave me a pleasure toy.”
“And what’s that?”
“It’s shaped like a…you know…”
“Oh,” he drawled, intrigued. “I’d like to see how you use it.” He rolled on top of Joan, parted her legs with his knees, and filled her with one fluid thrust. “Tomorrow.”
He eased in and out of her with smooth, easy movements. It was not a long joining, and their releases came at the same moment, accompanied by Joan’s sharp cries. They kissed, chuckled, then both rolled over to sleep. They had a whole lifetime ahead of them to make
