Perseverance In The Middle School: Personal Statement
Life is a journey that is traveled by many, however, not everyone gets to experience the fruits of their labor. Throughout the school year, I volunteer at my middle school and tutor students of all ages, ranging from first to eight grades. Each one of my students has grown into intelligent thinkers; curious about the world around them. Since I have been volunteering from a young ripe age of 13, surrounding myself with children creates a deep connection. I believe that it is my duty to aid and support them as they mature into improved readers and thinkers. In addition, by understanding their struggles, I am able to provide my students with feedback that will help them excel in that subject. Although perfection is the ideal goal during tutoring, perseverance is the preeminent objective. The idea of promoting effort during schoolwork can have extraordinary effects. Students will not only try for exceptional grades, but on the other hand, to grasp and gain …show more content…
In the sixth grade, I was expected to step up to the plate and be responsible for helping my brother and sister with homework. In fact, there were times where we had to stay up until midnight to finish the material I was clarifying. Ever since, I have been grateful that I had a unique situation that propelled my dedication to teach young children. Perseverance is the key for any uphill battle that one has to face. I am no stranger to that statement because I have seen many children who have struggled to understand the topic I was teaching them, such as long division or even something simple as Pronouns versus Nouns. A bulk of my students come to me searching for a way to understand a subject without putting in effort. Effort is what separates one person from the rest of the group. In particular, I travel straight from school to multiple sessions at my middle school, putting in heaps of effort to try to

Beating something can require perseverance in many different ways. In The Call of the Wild, Buck is taken from his cozy home and put on a sled dog team. He fights with the lead dog, Spitz, often, until one time Buck finally beat him in a fight. On the other hand, my Gram went to college and took a speech class. She was afraid of speaking in front of a large group of people, so she used perseverance to help her control her decisions. While Buck and Gram are different, they were both afraid at one point and both beat a fear they had. Both Gram and Buck had to experience something new, whether it was fighting with another dog or going to college and talking in front of people.…

Prior to actually stepping foot into the classroom, I was not prepared to deal with the kinds of real problems that many of my students were facing. Problems such as abuse, neglect, hunger, out-all-night mothers, and jailed fathers were and still are common for many of them. When I found that many of these children performed below expectations in their academic classes, I eagerly began to try to find ways to assist. As a music educator, I began teaching and composing songs and chants to help motivate students to do their best and make big dreams, regardless of social issues that affect them. I began to collaborate with their home room teachers to incorporate the areas that needed reinforcement into my…

I had always thought of myself as good with kids, so I decided to try participate in Tuesday Night Tutoring, a program hosted by my school aimed at helping children to read. I naively believed that I could give them a few tips I used when I first learned to read, and at the same time help them to absorb some information from the practice readings, but reality fell very far short of my hopes. I struggled both to convince the children that they were mispronouncing several words and that my pronunciations were any better, and my efforts to explain the meaning of various words only necessitated additional definitions. If they believed me, the children would usually forget everything within a week. I continued trying for almost twenty hours of reading tutoring,…

I have enjoyed tutoring students through the Literacy Corps for nearly two years. The program has helped push me outside of my comfort zone by leading and teaching students. Without challenging myself, I would never have been able to establish a connection with the many students and teachers in the Syracuse area that I have today. I greatly value these connections and relationships, which have helped further my learning experience in college.…

But when we do not give up, at the end of the tunnel, there is always light, and it only benefits us. Sometimes we are put in tough situations our self, for example, a student may be doing badly on his/her tests and assignments, but instead of deciding to just drop out of school, if he or she has perseverance and persistence, he/she will continue to study harder, focus in class more, and ask for extra help. Eventually their hard work will pay off, and the student will start to accomplish higher grades on his/her tests and…

Olsen. My reading level slowly got better and better. By third grade I was still pulled out of the classroom but instead of just being Mrs. Olsen and me, there were also other kids that struggled with reading too. In the beginning of fourth grade, I was tested to see if I would go back into reading recovery again. I passed the test with reading levels above my grade so I graduated from reading recovery. Mrs. Olsen changed my life because now I love to read and before reading used to make me hate having to go to school. I never thought anyone would be able to make that big of an impact on my life but she did. That made me want to become a teacher and make a difference in someone life like she made in mine. A problem today is that there are tons of students that don’t have the extra help or teachers that are willing to do everything in their power to make that difference for the student. I would like to help solve this problem by becoming a teacher and give my students everything I can to help them and hopefully make a different like Mrs. Olsen made. Not being able to read ended up teaching me to never give up, things take time, and the best way to have a problem solved is to find someone that is willing to help make a difference and stick with it. I found a problem in my life and now I am ready to make a difference and solve that…

As my son was finishing up his PreK program the teachers announced their retirement. I quickly knew this was my opportunity to live out my dream of being a preschool teacher. As part of my CDA requirements I needed to spend time in a classroom so I began volunteering in my daughters PreK class. I enjoyed being encouraged to be creative and playful in daily activities and have a substantial input in the classroom curriculum and schedule. I really liked using games, storytelling, and other activities to help children develop language and vocabulary, improve social skills, and learn basic science and math concepts. The highlights of my days volunteering was when I saw a child’s eyes light up when they learn/try something new. When they suddenly were able to make the letters in their name, or do something they weren’t previously able to do, I got as excited as they did. When the children were lined up waiting to come into class, and then run in and give me a hug, it warmed my…

During my early years of education, school was a bit more challenging for me than the average student. Consistently my performance appeared below expectations and I lacked the ability to comprehend information as quickly and efficiently as other students. Reciting the dreadful memories I experienced during my early childhood literacy development remain fluent this very moment. Classes were my least desirable event to experience everyday, and my attitude and mindset during those school hours did not enhance it. Being vocally active in the classroom was a challenge that I never willing conquered, I was not accustomed to speaking in front of other people, especially not my competitors. Often I would find myself standing within the perimeters…

I feel that my greatest skill is perseverance. When I was 9, I left brick and mortar education to pursue one of my greatest passions: figure skating. It was my dream to go the 2018 Winter Olympic Games representing the United States of America. Many years later, fractures in both of my knees ended that dream. I thought that I'd be able to return, and would have a fantastic comeback story, but the knee pain never left. I was never able to return to the sport.…

Over the last few years, I have spent 2-4 hours a week helping students with math. I know tutoring seems like a trivial task, intended strictly to improve a student’s grade, but in my opinion, it is much more than that. I enjoy tutoring not only because I love the subject of mathematics, but also because I feel as if I am truly having an impact on the person I am tutoring. According to George Washington Carver, “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.” I believe this to be true; I believe that those who struggle in classes are missing a valuable opportunity to seize the gift of universal education. Tutoring is important to me because I am given the opportunity to help people truly take advantage of that…
