SUBJECT: Personal Best Examples

I’m a member of the Filmmaker’s Society and recently had to take on a big leadership role at the end of last semester. As treasurer of the club I’m in charge of soliciting funding from the student council each semester and I have to attend a hearing to get our budget approved. Last semester, however, no one in our club was ever notified about the upcoming budget hearings until the day of. Since the budget had always been my duty, it was my responsibility to get the job done in a matter of hours before our hearing. Our budget basically consists of production equipment ranging from cameras to props and I had to go to many different officers in the club to get a sense of what we needed to out on our budget. I had quickly meet with the equipment manager, the president of the club, the officer in charge of running the film festival, and our social chair to figure what each one of them needed while still maintaining a lean budget. Overall, I was able to meet with 3 of them and tried to get as much of what they needed as possible.

It was partially my fault that we had to scramble in the first place as I should have been more aware of the budget hearings and should have at least asked the student council about it instead of waiting for them to notify us. I definitely enabled others to act, however, by being as supportive of their budget needs as possible and giving them all the resources they needed in terms of student council budget guidelines and finding price estimated for whatever they needed. I did not really challenge the process, as the student council is pretty rid when it comes to their guidelines. The board of directors chose to approve the budget, based on Mary’s 2001 budget and financials. My decision would have been the complete opposite. The decision I would have made was to ask Mary for documents backing up the proposed budget. Mary made the budget based on her grants and fundraising from 2001. She did not take into consideration that the grant may not have been renewed. If she had made a lower budget, or even a back up budget, she would have had an alternative plan if NYC did not renew the grant. I made the decision I did because Mary’s 2002 budget was made up on monies she was not even sure that she would have. Mary even based the development department raising more money on a grant she was not even sure would be offered to the organization. Organizational infrastructure had a large affect on my decision to reject the budget. The policies and procedures that are put into place by an organization are done so to build accountability and adjust to internal and external requirements. According to Business Development Group, Inc (1999-2009),…

I was scheduled to give a 45-minute speech I had spent months working on – taking an 8-hour course down to a 45-minute review was tough enough, but when I arrived, I asked the program coordinators where the educational programs were to be held – her response was, what educational programs? She finally let us have some of the tables that were set for the luncheon – the entire time the caterers were setting up the luncheon, talking and crashing dishes……

The council meeting began and I was immediately was struck by the many different individuals in attendance from all walks of life. While almost everyone in the building was there for a specific reason or issue, there was one tie to everyone: Money and the local economy. The Firefighters from the city of Huntsville were in attendance protesting the projected budget and their cut of that. A worker from the Mental Hospital in Huntsville gave a very logical plea to the Council about that funding of the mental institution. Many issues made…

Mead & Hampson (1996) developed a study involving the divided visual field paradigm and a phonological rhyme/non-rhyme task to test the speed and accurateness of either side of the brain. This study was used to investigate functional asymmetry between the left and right hemispheres in phonological processing. The research was taken out equally on 15 male and 15 females London Metropolitan University students ranging from ages 18 – 35 years old. They were all specifically chosen to be right–handed and had English as their first language thus providing a fair experiment to see whether our left hemisphere (left side of the brain) or the right hemisphere is faster and more accurate. In conclusion using the mean and standard deviation to determine our hypothesis, it was calculated that the left hemisphere had a higher mean and standard deviation score compared to the right hemisphere.…

Many parents were unwilling to participate, but I was persistent in making sure that they were up to date and kept in the loop. I even instructed the secretary to send out more emails, and, as a committee, the officers sought to personally reach out to all club members to make sure that they were meeting the monthly requirements and participating in all club sponsored events. Over the course of a month, I decided to change some policies and I instituted a social media page in order to make the club more accessible to everyone. It turns out, that more and more students began to interact with us more and things were finally getting back on track. I, and the rest of the officer corps, had decided that working with students instead of telling them exactly what to do, was the best approach to dealing with high school students of all abilities. This took awhile for me to learn, but it was worth it; many students live busy lives and I had to learn how we could work with them in order to achieve our goals. I wanted to make sure that everyone had the opportunity to pursue his or her own interest while still meeting the requirements of the club that they signed up…

The technical process for setting a budget emphasizes the need for involvement at all stages of the process. In an ideal world that would produce the best solution. However, the world is not ideal and not everyone can be allowed to do exactly as he or she would wish at the first instance. So potential conflicts arise and those involved in the budgetary process need to be aware of the behavioral aspects in order to maximize the good points and minimize the problems. The behavioral aspects may conveniently be summarized as relating to motivation, participation, feedback, group effects, budget slack and the politics of the organisation. In each of these areas there has been research into the effects, sometimes with inconclusive results.…
