Personal Characteristics Of Crisis Intervention

Describe three of the personal characteristics that may contribute to effective crisis intervention counseling. Life experiences is a good personal characteristic which could contributed to effective crisis interventions. James and Gilliland describe life experiences “as a resource for emotional maturity that, combined with training, enables workers to be stable, consistent, and well-integrated not only within a crisis” (pg. 21). I believe this definition is accurate because the more experience and training a person has the more well adapted they would be to handle themselves during a crisis to better assist and assess the situation/crisis. Poise is another personal characteristic which can be contributed to effective crisis intervention. James and Gilliland state “effective crisis workers are as steady and well-anchored” (pg.22). I believe the life experiences provide the crisis worker with poise due to their past experiences and trainings. I understand all crisis are major to the individual going through the crisis but I only have experience dealing with runaway teens who are not found for a few days, or parents dealing with physically aggressive children. I believe during these crises I was able to remain poise throughout and was able to be assertive. During these crisis, I was able to calm the parents down help them process the sequences before the youth leaving or becoming physical.
