Personal Experience With Physical Abuse
In order to overcome the experiences I had with physical abuse in my life, I must practice how I react towards those who have caused pain on me and to control and strengthen myself emotionally. One step I can take to heal from the destruction caused by physical abuse is practicing how I control my anger. For example, when I’m angry, instead of shouting at someone in a negative way, I should write about the pain I was feeling and why I was angry. This will allow me to reflect back on myself and to lessen my urge to yell. If I yell back furiously, that will cause even more unnecessary destruction. By lessening my urge to yell, I’d be able to communicate with that person in a much more respectful manner and receive the healing that I need. Another

    An abused woman lives in fear, unable to predict when the next attack will come. She may become isolated from friends and family, and increasingly dependent on her abuser. In these circumstances it can be very hard to make sense of what is really happening. Over time her self-esteem may be worn down. She may start to believe her abuser’s insults. She may blame herself for the abuse, or deny that it is taking place. She may ignore it, hoping that her partner -the man she loves will change. Abused women are not weak, submissive victims. It takes huge strength to live with an abusive partner. Women have to be strong and resourceful, adapting to all kinds of coping strategies to survive each day. Abused women can have a bad impact on the way a person thinks and interacts with the world around them. The chronic exposure to domestic violence—and the stress fear resulting from this exposure—can cause not only immediate physical injury, but also mental shifts that occur as the mind attempts to process trauma or protect the body. Domestic violence affects one’s thoughts, feelings and behaviors and can significantly impact one’s mental stability. Increased anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression symptoms are commonly observed among survivors of domestic violence. The reason I wrote this paper is because I was raised in domestic violence my whole life and it has affected me so much in my social life. I became so self-centered and hated the feeling of not knowing when the next argument or fight was going to be. People go through hard times hiding it from the world; secretly hoping someone finds out about their story and helps them. There are many children throughout the world that do not know what it is like growing up with a normal parental figure. They go everyday living the life they live hoping to get out of it. Children that are abused or neglected go day after day worrying about when they will eat next, be looked at normal, feel special, and feel loved again. Children that grow up in an abusive/neglected household do not grow up with the correct way of parenting. Jeannette in The Glass Castle is a child that goes through life with her two siblings being neglected by her parents. She struggles to get out of Welch and move to New York to start her life over. In Damaged, Jodie is a child that has been abused since she was very young. She has been through foster home after foster home till she meets Cathy. In the third book, A Stolen Life, Jaycee is kidnapped at the age of eleven and is abused by her kidnapper Phillip. She has two of his children by the age of seventeen and is forced to live with the fact that she will possibly not be able to see her family again. All three of these books show us that even though you have multiple rough patches in your life, you can always find a reason to keep moving forward.     An average of 1 in 4 or 25% of women in the United States has experienced physical or sexual abuse throughout an intimate affiliation at some point in time in their life (“Domestic Violence”, 2009). Among these individuals, nearly 2,000 do not make it and die of the resulted injuries they suffer from (“Women against Abuse”, 2012). When it comes to domestic violence, anyone can be a victim; the violence does not discriminate as to who will suffer from it no matter their sex, age, race, ethnicity, or financial background. Behaviors used by one person in a relationship to control the other are what define this dangerous act of crime.
