Personal Narrative: Assala, Ethiopia

Assala, Ethiopia, is the place I was born. It was a small, poverty-stricken village where we had limited access to healthcare. There is a lack of good cardiovascular surgeons in Ethiopia. “ I can not play or run any longer” was a phrase that I heard from one of my good friends at a young age. I remember my young friend suffering from heart disease in sixth grade, but he couldn’t get the proper medical attention because he didn’t have the money to go outside of Ethiopia to get the treatment he needed for his medical condition. I began thinking about becoming a cardiovascular surgeon at that moment because I was tired of seeing hundreds of people dying from lack of good medical care.
