Personal Narrative: It's 4 Am In San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua
It's 4 AM in San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua and I'm shivering from a fever of 104 F. Traveling alone in a foreign country, a fever's dreadful. A glass of orange juice becomes unfathomable as everyone else is whooping it up. At the time, it was the worst. The next days plan for my birthday was to salsa the night away. Instead, I had my own pity-party. An onlooker would view this as the saddest moment of all time, but with only two words of Spanish - hola and cerveza - I thought c'est la vie.

Until this point, Nicaragua enchanted me. Granada, a vibrant Colonial city. A boat trip on Lake Nicaragua, to the perfect volcanic double cones of Ometepe. The Caribbean vibe on Little Corn Island. SJDS for surfing and nightlife. Granted, there were some hiccups like a sunburn, but who doesn't love peeling layers of dead skin to get that one perfect sheet? For the first foray into Central America, I fell for everything Latino; the warm people, dancing and music, tasty food, and spectacular scenery.

The hostel owner translated the symptoms and I dragged myself to the pharmacist. His English matched my Spanish. Weeks later I was sure pleased to discover the meds banned at home and elsewhere. I'm able to find the comedy in this and tell a humorous story to you now (twitch twitch).

Finally moving, one foot in front of the other, I reached cabanas right on the beach. In an instant, the new environment and people brought energy back into my step. The motley crew that became fast friends, pretended it was my birthday a week later. Lobster dinner, music, cervezas and laughter. Plus a couple new Spanish words - fiesta and tortuga.

You may wonder why I'd learn turtle so early on, for which there is a riveting answer. After dinner, we moved to the beach and there she was, laying her eggs. How extraordinary to watch this mama lay 92 of them. Witnessing this was one of those unexpected moments that I know why travel is so

Never have I woken up faster than getting a phone call at 1am saying, “I need you STAT to H4104!” Racing from the call room to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, I had a million thoughts running through my head. Why is the RN calling me STAT? Is the patient coding? Is the intra-aortic balloon pump I am responsible for not functioning? When I arrive, the patient’s pressures were spiraling downward and the surgeon said he must go back down for surgery. Adrenaline pumping through my veins, I realized this was not an emergency simulation I had been taught – this was real. As soon as we reach the OR, the patient went asystole. Immediately, anesthesia started injecting medications, the OR staff lined up to do compressions and I managed the balloon pump; we…

I was born and raised in Austin, Texas however, my parents immigrated from Mexico. My father made his journey from Sombrerete, Zacatecas and my mother made her’s from Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato. They met working together at the restaurant my father currently works at called Fonda San Miguel. As my mother grew older and had multiple kids, the effects from working long hours took a toll on her and she decided it was best to not work. My family of two brothers and two sisters was living under a single income. My oldest sister was able to move out while I was still young as well as my older brother a couple of years after her. Miami, FL is a place that has to be felt rather than seen or heard—and by that I mean observed beyond all senses, with mind, body, heart, and soul. I’ve been entrenched in it my whole life, a little Cuban princesita not so different from all the rest, but it’s only as I’ve gotten older that I’ve fully felt like a part of a community, a culture. I feel it when I talk, casually, to the elderly cashier at my neighborhood grocery store, a familiar combination of Spanish, English, and what many call cubanismos, phrases with meanings that simply will not tolerate literal translations, spilling forth. I feel it while seated at a table of no fewer than four relatives on any given evening, judging the quality of a restaurant on the quality of their flan de caramelo or their café. I feel it, too, in the colorful songs of Ernesto Lecuona and the ardent verses of José Marti, but most of all in the anecdotes of my grandparents and great aunt, the nostalgia of long-settled immigrants, echoes of sorrow, shared over dominoes and rice and beans and coladas of espresso.…

In the Hispanic culture, one of the most common and well-known traditions is a Quinceañera. Going to another cultural event that is different from my own is very educational yet a rewarding experience. Some of the distinct elements that really put the event together are the experience of the event, the different phrases in that culture, verbal communication and cultural distinctiveness of the culture, and was able to understand how the Hispanic culture is different from traditional American culture.…

It started just as any normal Saturday would; December 8, 2012, I woke up, went through my morning routine and went to soccer practice. I was competing for a spot on the North Carolina ODP (Olympic Development Program) soccer team. Training was being held at fields about two hours from my house. I sat in the backseat of my dad’s car with my two sisters and as we rode to the fields I began to mentally prepare myself for how I would play my best and make the team.…

The Dominican Republic, known for its beautiful beaches and balmy weather, was the last place I ever imagined I would find myself in this past summer vacation. On this week long trip, it wasn't for the warm ocean waves or the traditional Dominican cuisine I was called to, I was called to serve the beautiful Dominican people. On the third day of the trip, instead of heading out to the worksite where we had been pouring the concrete footers of a plastics and water filter factory, I opted to travel with a group to the childrens' cancer ward in Santiago and visit the patients. We started out our visit by performing a few dances we had taught our vacation bible school and handing out fun little gift we had brought with us. We played ball with some…

Ever since I got into my university three years ago, my family and I didn’t have much chance to spend time together because everyone was so busy with their own schedule. So last year, we all decided to go uptown to celebrate my birthday there. We chose to go to Suratthani because it was our favorite place. We left our house late in the evening on one hot summer day in April. Because of the very hot weather, we brought our hats, our sun block, and never to forget, our swimsuits. We were on the car the whole night and arrived there in the morning the next day. We decided to stay at Sunset-Buri Resort, which is a very modern and beautiful resort by the sea. The beach was so white and clean that I wanted to go there as soon as we arrived.…
