Personal Narrative: Leading The Hilliard Heritage Running Club
“We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of detrimination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort (Jesse Owens, Olympic Trackstar),” I do not fear the unknown; I fear the day I stop trying to be the best. I cannot change that currently, people are faster than me, but that shouldn’t stop me from taking lead and becoming the best. Each time I race, I think of the pride I will feel afterwards if I give it my all, to take home a win, but also I think of the shame and humiliation I will feel if I don’t. Even if I am not currently the best, I know one day my hard work and mental toughness will pay off in some way, because it’s how badly I want to be the champion, and that is what I work for everyday of …show more content…
We started small. After talking to some teachers and some friends from cross country and the previous year at track, we found a place to put our stuff and met every other day. I lead our group in many hard workouts to improve our muscles and lung capacity, as well as researched the best stretches and core exersices. We’d even set meetings on weekends. Although, soon I realized that I would need a coach or two to guide us further. I contacted Mrs. Tremayne and set up meeting times where we could go over some permission slips, and dates/times. I got to announce our club on the announcements, as well and got to get T-shirts. Eventually, We met every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday with two great coaches named Coach Tremayne and Coach Erin Luzader who helped us with our workouts and get insight into the next season of track and High School cross country. From circuits to warmups we used to prevent injuries, Running Club made a difference in my, and hopefully other’s lifes. The soul purpose behind creating a club was to make our running become better and to keep ourseleves in shape for the next track season, so we could achieve

To begin with, Bernd Heinrich identifies on when runners win, they have an “involuntary gesture” to which they put up their hands in the air. Bernd Heinrich clarifies, “This involuntary gesture is reflexive for most runners who have fought hard, who have breathed the heat and smelled the fire, and then felt the exhilaration of triumph over adversity.” ( Heinrich 69 ). During this quote, it has shown that from mental power we didn’t let problems get in the way of our dreams within sports, but how we really just kept on moving through the journey from the success of winning. Furthermore, the author paints a picture by describing the feelings receives when he approaches someone or something, running their heart out just to achieve their motive. Heinrich sympathizes,“ I get choked up when I see a kid, or anyone else, fighting hopeless odds- someone who goes there to run the lonely roads with a dream in heart, a gleam in the eye, and a goal in mind” (Heinrich 71 ). Fighting these hopeless odds, we’ve shown the determination to keep on going, as we have fought hard to reach our main objective, and by using our mental strength it gave us the advantage to accomplish our dreams to sports. In short, Bernd describes the thoughts in our minds as we run and and how we never stop just to win these goals we have. The author lastly explains to the…

What people don’t realize is that if you're a true athlete you want to earn your praise. You don’t want to be handed a trophy or ribbon if you don’t place or earn it in some way. It will just make it worse because you think you're good but you’re in all reality not that good. To top it off you won’t be able to work on something because you don’t think you need to.…

Leadership comes from the ability to make the wrong call, and athletes know this. We have all had to make a decision with no right choice, and sometimes we carry out the task and don’t get the result we have been trying to find, this causes us to be stronger and except we did all we can do. The athletes that can be leaders will be able to be more efficient in so many different aspects of life. Athletics create a sense of discipline that our generation is much in need of, and the more disciplined we become the better the world will turn out to be. Living in a world where our attention spans are shrinking and we are not able to adapt very well, the commitment we achieve through athletics can save us. Commitment is a combination of determination through discipline and knowing somebody relies on you. Athletics will teach the younger generation to withstand more difficult tasks. Why I run? I find joy in effortlessly soaring. I am a hummingbird, despite my size I travel great distances, seemingly tireless, forever seeking out the good in each day. I run so the path becomes clear—I walk on the beach, connect my headphones, select the perfect playlist, and I just let it be! Anything weighing on me slides of my shoulders and into the…

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit” - Aristotle. This quote really sums up, in my opinion, sports. I am a runner and love Cross Country. While I believe all coaches say it, I can say without a doubt that my Cross Country team works the hardest out of every sport. I don’t know another sport that can run 26 hills back to back at 80-90% speed/effort. Maybe wrestlers, but they are kind of crazy. But this hard work is what separates the winners and the losers. Too often do I see runners, exclaiming someone's fast time, but then degrades it with a remark like “They’re just born athletic”. While many people are built differently or are “naturals” at certain things, this totally negates the amount of…

Courage and determination aren’t the only lessons we can learn from successful athletes. Some of the best athletes in history are the ones who can take their achievements in stride. You have to love a sport in order to do it well. Hard-working and motivated people understand that winning isn’t everything. Leading a team in wins or pins, is meaningless when compared to one just giving their best shot at it. Champion distance runner Joan Benoit says,”Winning is neither everything nor the only thing. It is one of many things.”…

Track taught me how competitive I was. My competitiveness is the major factor I tried out for the track team my 7th grade year of middle school. I had a friend named Jamille who was known to be one of the fastest guys in school. So wanting to know where I stood in terms of running I challenged him to a race, but after countless races we couldn’t decide on who was fastest. Due to the results of our races and the fact that Jamille’s mom was a track star; Jamille announced he was going to join the track team and become faster than me. I was convinced he would indeed become faster if he joined and I didn’t, so I decided to join the track team also for the sole purpose of beating my rival. My reason of joining the track team exemplified how competitive I was. Track also brought out the competitor in me through the races. Although it was Jamille and I first year running track he was better at it. I ran the same event he did so we could compete against each other, but he beat me every time initially, so I started to do extra training, like running around the block in my neighborhood and doing pushups and sit-ups daily. Because of my effort I was able to beat my rival in one of the two races we shared by the end of the season. I never realized I was so competitive until running track. Never would have thought I would commit to a sport team and…

"In the end, it’s extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more that, too. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then it takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. And finally, it takes a great deal of love, fairness and respect for your fellow man. Put all these together, and even if you don’t win, how can you lose?” jesse owens…

Well that is just the beginning of you striving to be a better version of yourself. It demonstrates though high angle shot that shows different athletes from different part of the world struggling to push forwards. Through these camera angels we can better understand that for the athletes the true challenge begins and no matter from what background or ethnicity you are or come from it only get harder from here. Our fear our doubts, doubts of insecurity like how Nike put it “ our insecurity lines up like a firing squad ready to shoot you out of the sky, but don’t lose heart does are not easily defeated but those through you have are far from invisible”. Like I mention before this video shows us that this is what Nike calls the grind. This is the part where the battle between you and your mind your body and everyone around you is that this is just a game and that this is just a waist of time. It well tells you that your opponents are stronger than you that you can’t leave your situation because of who you are or what your color of skin is. Nike expresses that we must drown out those voices with the sound of our own heart beat fighting and struggling to where we want to be. We must…

I lived in Branson, Mo so I would always get the workout I needed for my events. My coach’s would envy that I did that to become a better runner. One coach in particular was really proud of me for that and his name is Coach Blackwell. He and I would always go running after school and he would get mad because I would always out run him. So a month later came the competing part of track I remember my first track meet like it was yesterday. It was a clear day very warm, the stands filled with excited mom’s and dad’s and the runners siblings and their friends. The first event was the 100m dash my best friend Chastin Jolley was in that race. He was so nervous about the race but I knew he would do great because I would see him run circles around the people he raced with at practice. He ended up beating the other runners. It seemed like forever but they called my event the 4X800m. All of the runners for my school who were participating in that race were all giving everyone confident boost telling each other “We got this” or “You’ll do great”. The first runner who was up was James Quinlin he was the starter he gave us a huge lead on the race, next was Anthony Larson he kept up the winning pace, Then it was Micah Daniels he also kept up the lead, Finally came my turn the Anchor, The Anchor has the most…
