Personal Narrative: My Experience At Vanderbilt University
I remember how when I first walked into a fraternity house on Vanderbilt's campus, I immediately thought that this was a place that I could never belong. Having a disability and identifying as gay, I thought that I had somehow faked my way into Vanderbilt and its perfect society. Southern Methodist University’s mission statement resonates with the same values I admire about a University such as “promoting an environment emphasizing individual dignity and worth”. Growing up I lacked essential self-worth. Upon beginning highs school I was very confused and frustrated person. I was learning to accept myself for being gay and the conservative and traditional environment I was in made it difficult for me to express who I was. The misrepresentation and disrespect I gained from being a double minority in high school fueled a passion in me which became the catalyst for positive change in my academic career. Since I began to attend Tarrant County College, I have joined the Cornerstone honors program offered at the campus and…

Being in a minority race can affect most aspects of your life, including your college experience. A study done by sociologists Rashawn Ray and Jason Rosow proves that black and white fraternity men experience two very different college experiences. After studying fifty-two fraternity men from three white and four black fraternities, they determined this was caused by the privilege of visibility and accountability. According to the study, white fraternity men had a hyper level of invisibility, meaning that they could disassociate their actions from their fraternity. For example, when a white fraternity member is not wearing his Greek letters he cannot easily be distinguished as a member of that fraternity and is free to do as he pleases, such as vandalize campus. On the other hand, black fraternity members have a hyper level of visibility. On a white-majority campus, black fraternity members are easily picked out by other students and staff members even when not…

The event that I choose to follow summer fest was a simple and casual visit to the wellness and recreational center, fancy way of saying the gym. Upon my first ever visit to Florida International University I still remember at our freshmen orientation entering the gym and thinking to myself this seems like a place that I will be visiting often during my four year tenure at school. And boy was I right, the facility was clean and professional looking very much like a professional gym would appear, the staff where all kind and ready to assist you if help was ever necessary, something that I truly valued. I was extremely exited to take a spinning class at the FIU gym, I had only ever heard positive reviews and I was looking forward to the experience as well. Personally I am obsessed with fitness so any class, or activity is something that I love to experience which is what drove me to experience the class myself, and did, I love it. When I got out of that class I was sweating so much, I felt like I had gone on a run around the world and it so amazing, the instructor knew exactly what she was doing and had no problem helping you out if you needed it, the music was fun and exiting extremely up tempo. Overall I can only rave about the experience, it was positive and motivational. It has truly inspired me to no matter how stressed I may be I can always go down to the gym and relieve my stress while gaining a benefit as well.…

As a first-generation student, I am significantly influenced by the Student Affairs staff at my undergraduate institution. When I arrived at Ramapo College, I quickly realized I was not prepared for college-level work, if it were not for the Educational Opportunity Fund Program, I would have felt lost and would have struggled both academically and financially. Throughout my undergraduate career, I have had many Student Affairs professionals guide me to academic success and personal development. As a result, I made the conscious effort to work with the minority students on campus and accepted the position as a Resident Program Assistant for the EOF program. I worked with a diverse population of students where the majority came from low-income communities who had the potential to perform college level coursework. While…
