Personal Narrative: My Experience At Vanderbilt University

I remember how when I first walked into a fraternity house on Vanderbilt's campus, I immediately thought that this was a place that I could never belong. Having a disability and identifying as gay, I thought that I had somehow faked my way into Vanderbilt and its perfect society. After a few months, I ended up feeling like I belonged at Vanderbilt more and I began to realize that there is no "perfect" Vanderbilt student. As I have become more involved in the Vanderbilt community, I have always looked for roles and activities that would allow me to make Vanderbilt more welcoming for others. Therefore as a resident advisor; I work to host programs that spotlight areas of campus that are not always given the credit they deserve. For example, my
sophomore year, I hosted an event with the Caribbean Students Association and this year, I had an event focused on disability at Vanderbilt. My desire to make Vanderbilt more welcoming for all has also led to my involvement in IFC's Inclusivity Act, in which I have had the honor of speaking at every year. However, the most impactful way that I have displayed leadership at Vanderbilt is through my advocacy for students with disabilities. This role has allowed me to consult with Chancellor Zeppos and ensure that students with disabilities feel welcome. One of my favorite events that resulted from my advocacy is an annual dinner that Chancellor hosts to hear from students with disabilities and learn about their experience.
