Personal Narrative: My Experience Of Reading And Writing
Reading and writing are two skills we learn early on in school, they are the basic tools teachers and parents instill in children, meaning that as someone who’s spent 14 years in school, I have had a lot of experience with reading and writing. Thinking back on my early school days in 1st and 2nd grade, I didn’t care for reading or writing. There were so many other things on the forefront of my mind like recess and lunch that learning just fell in the background.
It wasn’t until 3rd grade that I started to actively read on my own which was aided by the fact that my school had a program where if a student read, took quizzes about the books, they would be awarded points and if 100 points were achieved the student will take part in a parade and receive a

I wasn’t at all interested in the trophy or the parade, but I was good at taking quizzes and so I read. On the last day to accumulate points, I was 10 points shy of a hundred points. I remember being indifferent to the fact, but once my 3rd grade teacher found out, she announced to the class “let’s help Shannon get 100 points” and she proceeded to ask around for books from the other students. She sat me down at the corner to read while she taught class. When I finally took the quiz that would put me at 100 point, I remember my teacher and my classmates being very proud of me, and that’s my first memory of reading but it wasn’t until a year later that I found the wonderful world of Hogwarts and my love affair with reading took root. Like most kids that grew up in the early 2000s, Harry Potter and his wondrously magical adventures with Ron and Hermione become a way for me to escape my mundane muggle life. I didn’t just randomly pickup one of the Harry Potter books and started to read it, I wasn’t much of a reader then, someone that I looked up

My writing process is usually all over the place, I have to be in my room with my door shut, my music on, my fan on, and my television on, weird, I know, but that is what I have to do in order to keep myself concentrated. After I am all situated I begin by writing down different ideas on a couple sheets of paper, listing ways I could support this idea and how it relates to my topic, sometimes when I am stuck I look up sample essays online to help me out of my rut. Once I finally choose an idea I start writing the first things that pop into my head down on another sheet of paper, it usually ends up being a jumbled mess that only I can understand. After all of my ideas are laid out onto the paper I begin placing numbers beside them so I know…

Writing isn’t something that was ever stressed in my high school and since I am a computer science major, didn’t think that I would really be needing to write very often. But, this class has completely changed my perspective on writing, along with how I write. I have learned how to better plan my papers, create strong arguments, and how to create a good flow in the final product.…

I don't remember specifics on how I learned to read, but I do remember learning how to read at an early age. My mother was an elementary school teacher and spent a lot of time working with me on my letters and sounds. I remember doing a lot of flashcards with my mom on the different letters and phonemes. I also remember my mom reading to me a lot, especially at night. I would sit in her lap and follow along as she read. As I became a better reader my mom would stop at different words and let me read. I always enjoyed reading with my mom and was excited when I could actually read the words with her.…

I have always had struggles and difficulties when it comes to writing. This is due to the fact that English is not my first language, and that I am still learning. I started to learn how to speak, and listen, and mainly write in English when I was in ninth grade. Writing has been the hardest to deal with it, because I have many spelling and mechanical errors and most importantly, how to organize an essay, but this changed when I took English 49 with Professor Lucero. In my first day of class, I was assigned to write an essay about my experience with writing. I was not completely sure on how to start my essay and how to organize it. When I was in High School, I did not write many essays, and the few I did, I have endless help. So, I just my…

I used to believe I was a good writer. Throughout my elementary school education, creative writing dominated curriculum which allowed my extremely creative mindset to thrive. In middle school, I developed an elitist mentality about my writing ability. Believing that I reached my academic peak, I felt no need to sharpen my writing skills, causing me to become close minded to critique or other writing styles. Upon entering high school, I still clung to the idea that I was the best, but after my first week of class, I realized how weak my writing skills were in contrast to those of other students. Now, I am aware of my strengths and weaknesses as a writer, and hope to have come far from my middle school self.…

The first books I ever started reading were Winnie the Pooh and Dr Suess books. When I was young my parents were really good about getting me started with reading different books and for a long time I loved reading, as long as it was books I got to choose and enjoyed reading myself. Once I got further along in school and they started mandating what books we had to read I got to the point where I didn’t find reading enjoyable any longer. I didn’t like most of the books my teachers were picking for us to read so I felt like I had to force myself to read them and it caused me to even stop reading books outside of school…

*It wasn’t until fourth grade I was introduced to mystery books. There was a bookstore at my school and one of my friends convinced me to get a book I thought was really weird, but then I read it and it ended up being one of my favorite books. After the exhilarating experience of going on the adventure of May Bird, I wanted to read more and more mystery books. I found that I also loved action books, Cracker.…

Things continued like that until I was able to read Harry Potter. Which I believe I was in the 3rd grade. My Mother and I would then race to see who could finish each book the fastest. Sometimes my mom would use scout camp to her advantage and send me off so that she would be able to catch up. That would make me mad, and motivate me to read even more.…

Reading was fun when it was newly acquired skill. I was excited to read to my parents when they returned home from work. I remember reading my favorite book series by R.L. Stein (Goosebumps) while in the second and third grades. The series was about hauntings that affected teenagers. I remember my favorite book in the series was Piano Lessons Can Be Murder. I could relate to that because at the time, I was taking piano lessons.…

Although I don’t remember exactly how I learned to read, I guess it sort of came to me as a little child when my parents used to read me prayers and stories from the Bible. In middle school, reading was essential in getting a good grade for English with the "Accelerated Reader" system being implemented at our school. Basically, it was a online program where you would be able to take tests on books once you have read them, and each book had a certain amount of points based on its difficulty and length. Every semester, you needed to have a certain amount of points in order to get an A in English, and I always made sure too reach the point goal every year. My parents are the main reason of my success, and I will be forever thankful for the books they made me read and also for my success of…

Everyday people learn how to be a better English writer and it is successful because mostly everyone in the United States speaks English. In my experience, I’m learning how to become a better English writer everyday by reading books and writing essays. I’ve taken English 60A, English 60B, and now I’m taking English 50. Writing essays and reading article’s in English 50 helps me to become a stronger writer. In my portfolio I am going to edit my best essay that I did in class and I am also going to revise my biggest challenged essay. Although I use speak and write in English everyday in the world, I am still learning how to become a better writer. My experience as a writer in English has grown since the first day in English by learning to use sources in an essay, how to cite properly, to write 650-1000 word essays, and to critique my classmates work.…

I was not always good at writing or reading. I had to go to a reading program to get better. At first, reading and writing was annoying because I was forced into it. I am horrible at putting what I am thinking into words and having it make since while trying to get my point across. I have been told that a good place to start would be to just put the ideas on paper without worrying about grammar or spelling. All Kinds of Mind said that creating an efficient work includes “attention, memory, language, spatial and sequential ordering, and higher order cognition”.…
