Personal Narrative: My First Summer With Inlet
2013 was my first summer with Inlet. Due to being so young, I was advice to only participate in the first 2 weeks. Back then I was a hip hop dancer, I didn’t know what modern was nor did I ever take a modern class. I remember walking in feeling nervous but as soon as I saw everyone hugging each other, I knew this was where I belonged.

In 2014, I decided that I wanted to come back to Inlet for another summer. I also knew that I wanted to stay for the whole time, but sadly that wasn’t exactly an option due to certain circumstances. This was my first year with a pre-professional ballet company and I loved it. I remember circling up on the last day crying because I couldn’t stay. I loved it more than anything. Right then and there I knew next year was the year I was going to participate in the full thing.

I knew this was something that I wanted to do. One of my biggest fears was that was used to be my team mates or friends were now going to me my teacher someone that I wouldn’t be as close to. But that wasn’t the case.

I would not be the person I am today if it weren’t for Inlet. They didn’t just teach me how to dance. They always talk about how they want to further people through dance and they have definitely furthered me. I have been taught not to hide and to have confidence in everything I do. They gave me the opportunity to show them what I can do and help me continue to get better from there. You aren't just another number, you’re a person that they actually care enough to invest time into.

Words can’t even begin to describe how much Inlet means to me. I start the day off with a smile and still have it 6 hours later. Although I’m not sure if being a dancer is the correct profession for me, everything I have learned can help me in anything I venture to do. It’s an honor to have the opportunity to work with Inlet Dance company, they are my family, and I wouldn’t spend my time doing anything

Even though I was practicing outside of the dance studio, I still felt like I was not as good as the other dancers. I was still feeling like I had to work harder than the other dancers, as well. The people that I was dancing with had been dancing since they were three; whereas, I started dancing when I was eight years old. Even though it might not seem like that big of a difference, to me it made a huge difference.…

Attending the Pride friday at IUPUC before the beginning of school has been one of the most helpful events. By going to this I met some friends and learned more about the school itself. Although I have made the choice not to stay at IUPUC all four years of my college career, being here my first semester has started me off great. During this event they spoke of how we start and end our four years in the same way. I am just glad I have been able to enjoy my first semester by making some new friends, learning new strategies to working and figuring my life out.…

Over the course of this summer semester I have been exposed to many new learning experiences and opportunities. I am most thankful for the supervisor that I had at my agency, and the group of students that I have worked with this summer. This summary will be a rap out/ outline of some of the things that I have participated in this summer. I attended my agency four days out of the week, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and on Fridays. At first I experienced the initial reluctance that everyone faces when presented with a new, alien situation; however, I was also possessed with an intense curiosity. I knew that I was not the creative, artistic type. I did not have any idea of what electives I would take at the public high school nor did I care about the daily fashion of my peers. I realized that above all else that I desired to attend a school that would play to my strengths. So, I studied up, took the entrance exam, and was accepted. After I received the letter, my excitement did not cease until a few weeks into freshman year.…

When I joined the Bridgewater-Raritan program in August, I did not know what to expect. I knew that band was going to be hard work and a lot different than middle school. Personally, I think I have gotten more out of being a part of the program than I did in middle school, both with my skills and life lessons. I remember one of my first days when Mr. Markiewicz said that we would build an unbreakable relationship with our instrument. I have to admit that when he said that I giggled a little and said “yeah right” to myself. I hate to say it, but Mr. Markiewicz, you were right. I have grown to love practicing; I can feel my fingers responding faster, my air intensity increasing, and my mind becoming more alert whenever I pick up my clarinet. I can look back and see how much I have improved since the last note I played as an eighth grader, and I smile a little bit, knowing that this is only the beginning of my development in music.…

There is not a single feeling greater than the one you experience when you make a positive impact on someone else’s life. Thankfully, I was able to experience that in my junior year. My high school has a program called Link Crew that is designed to help alleviate the anxiety of freshmen’s transition in to high school. When I signed up to get involved, I never realized how strongly it would affect not only my life, but also the life of everyone else who came in contact with it one way or another. Junior year was my first year involved in the program. At first, I was not sure if I would be able to handle it because it was a club that required a large time commitment. I was already involved in my advisory board, student council, and also I had been on the varsity softball team for both years prior to my junior year, along with working anywhere from three to five days a week. It was a very busy time in my life for a while, but I soon came to realize that Link Crew was completely worth it once I started seeing the effect it had on my school.…

Because I was always one of those kids that never felt comfortable doing any sport, when I discovered that I had a talent for dancing, I was overjoyed. I started dancing during my fifth grade year of school. Immediately I became infatuated with the art. Working very hard my sixth grade year enabled me to join my academy’s dance company. One day during my musical theatre class while doing a combo something wasn’t right. My right leg had a twinging pain and when I did the big kick at the end of the combo, I knew I had pushed myself too far. What should have been the beginning of a long dance career turned into a very long year and a half search of trying to find a way to heal whatever was wrong. It was an experience that I’ll never forget.…

Drowsy and distracted is a recipe for disaster when you are floating aimlessly in the Atlantic Ocean. You are responsible for making sure you do not drift off into the endless void. I will admit that I sometimes find it hard to stay awake during an early morning class but that is nothing compared to the focus it takes to not nod off as the soothing swells rock your inner tube. My friend, Tiffany and I luckily had the foresight to tie our inner tubes together as to not stray from each other but had no plans for what to do if we strayed from all land in general.…
