Personal Narrative: My First Swim
It was the sound of the buzzer that beckoned me to the block. I mounted the block and fastened my goggles tight against my face. I wrapped my toes around the edge of the block and peered down into the clear light blue water. Next, a voice spoken from over a speaker told swimmers to “take their mark”. I bent down and within a couple seconds, the buzzer went off and I dove into the water. Many memories such as this one come to mind when I think about my first swim meet. My first swim meet is an experience that is very meaningful to me because it reinforced the importance of good sportsmanship, perseverance, and determination.

One of these reasons was that it reinforced the idea of camaraderie and good sportsmanship. There is something really special about being part of a team and building friendships with fellow team mates. My first swim meet also emphasized the importance of qualities such as determination and perseverance. Swimming requires endurance and this in turn produces perseverance, in my opinion. I felt really nervous during my first swim meet, but I also remembered that both my swim meet and being part of my swim team has taught me a lot of valuable life lessons. These valuable lessons can apply to my everyday life, even when I’m away from the pool. These valuable life lessons are the main reason why my first swim meet is so important to me.
My first swim was full of many new sights to see and sounds to hear. There were hundreds of swimmers present, all looking for a chance to show the audience their talent and to do their best in each of their heats. Among all of these positive aspects of my first swim meet was the valuable life lessons that it taught me. My first swim meet emphasized the importance of having good sportsmanship, and of having determination and perseverance. These are life lessons that I will take away with me for many years to

Trepidation filled my head. Despite the negative 10 degree weather, sweat pooled in my gloves and rolled down my face. Thoughts raced through my mind; a wrong execution could mean death. 11 years of ski lessons had cultivated to this one moment. My life was on the line, yet a wave of excitement shook me. I took a look down at the jump that had come to dominate Joe’s backyard, replacing his childhood swing set. The jump was sizable, but not gargantuan. From previous hits I noticed its “poppy” lip - skier talk for a jump that sends you up rather than out - which is ideal for the trick I was about to attempt: a backflip.…

Through my high-school rowing career, it was my goal to win first place in at-least one competition, whether it be in a boat with four people, or a boat with eight people. Shortly after I was added to the team, I switched places with the stroke seat in my boat due to my determination and hard efforts. Stroke seat sets the rhythm for the rest of the rowers, and as I quickly improved to be the most powerful and technical rower in my quad boat, I was to be the metronome. That year, we won most of our competitions. For the following rowing seasons, I was set as stroke seat in many of the boats I had competed in. I continued to improve my technique and speed in the boat, and became one of the most reliable stroke seat members in my school's entire…

As a child, I was outgoing and talkative, but in 4th grade, I became more self-conscious and shy. That summer, I signed up for The Oak Ridge Otters Summer Swim Team. I was nervous to join because I knew no one. It felt like everyone was judging me for being the new member. A group of teens, maybe in middle school at the time, noticed that I looked lonely and called me over. They talked to me and introduced kids my age. They made me feel less nervous and excited to continue to swim. This was the first team that showed sports wasn’t about the sport itself, but also growing friendship and memories. The middle schoolers also taught me to include others and not to ignore someone for being aloof.…

I have a deep interest in the ocean and marine life, which was fostered when my family and I moved to the Pacific Coast. This interest grew further after I went on a backstage tour to the aquarium at the Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. Due to this continuous exposure to the ocean and the creatures that live there, I am focusing my education around my interest in marine life. It's for this reason that I’m majoring in Marine Biology with a minor in Chemistry. With this education, my goal is to become an Aquarist, and build my way up to becoming an ocean or aquarium diver. As a diver, I want to have the opportunity to study coral reefs, and create and implement conservation plans. In addition, I want to study sea turtles and ways to conserve their declining…

One of the professions I have a lot of interest in would be marine biology. I took the high school course on it last year and I had a lot of fun in the class. The critters were adorable and I was able to play with all of them, whenever I wanted. My favorite, honestly, would have to be the brittle sea star. It was so cool!…

The entire first week, I was stuck with the coach to work on my diving. He kept repeating that I should dive with my head instead of my whole body. While my body and my mind told me, "Quit! Quit!" in my heart, I felt that quitting was not the right response. I wanted to become as good a swimmer as my teammates.…

To this day I compete in my high school swim team, and yet I can’t seem to forget tryouts. All I remember is that I wasn’t sure of just how good I needed to be, so I spent five hours a day in the pool, burning my back just to make sure that I had done everything I could. That is to say that I see myself as a highly competitive individual, and I also have seen myself limited by my financial background. Maybe I couldn’t compete in the swim club, or maybe I couldn’t go to the FCCLA (a club) national competition this year because the trip to California was too expensive, but if something I am sure of, is that if I could, I would have. Now, surely I am unique, as it is technically impossible for someone to be exactly like anyone else, and what separates me from the rest, I think, is my tenacity, my need to grow. As a young child, I was constantly compared with to my older brother. He had good grades, he was smart. Being the youngest in probably most situations (I started school early) I was never heard, I was to follow examples, but I wanted to be the example. I want to be great, and I will be regardless of what challenges I have to face, or what barriers people put in front of me, I will be…

I have been running since I started Modified Track and Field in the seventh grade. Running has been a part of my life ever since then. When I decided to join track I felt as though it was the worst mistake that I could have ever made, simply because i did not like running as a child. After trying it for the first year and not giving up I enjoyed it very much and that is when I stated that I would continue to run track till I graduated high school. Then came ninth grade and not only did I continue to do Outdoor Track but I also joined Indoor Track and it helped me improve with my running for Outdoor Track. I participated in Soccer from sixth grade till ninth grade, because come tenth grade I realized I had a strong passion for running,…

I remember day after day going to swimming lessons in the summer of 2002 at the Mount Vernon pool. Almost every day I walked by the ladder that seemed to go on forever. I used to sit on the pools edge and watch the older kids do flips and other cool tricks off of the high dive. Many times I had gotten half way up the ladder but couldn't bring myself to go all the way up. For a seven year old going off the high dive was like a right of passage and a way to be seen as "cool" in the eyes of the older kids. Today I will be telling you about the first time a braved the high dive.…

For the past fifteen years of my life I have been a swimmer. I wake up at six in the morning to jump in a cold pool to stare at a black line for miles, just to shed a hundredth of a second off my time. I have lived with the stench of chlorine and fried hair because I want to become better. There is neither money nor fame in swimming, just the strongest internal motivation that pushes me to be the best I can be. Swimming has made look for the path of most resistance, to enjoy hard work and not run away from it. I have been able to push my body to its physiological, psychological, and emotional limits and have learned so much through these trials. It has taught me leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship, and determination. Through years of hard work…
