To me respect means looking up to someone or something and letting the person know that you care about how they feel. When I was a little kid, I was always told to respect my elders which meant I was not to talk back to them or make fun of them and I was to listen to them when they spoke. Inside the dojang I show respect to everyone in my Soo…
Stepping into a dojo that is also used as a rec room, the smell of sweat instantly hits you like a slap in the face. The front entrance is blocked with shoes that were owned by little kids to older adults. You have to tip toe your way through the sea of shoes. You can see a big room full of karatekas, which is the Japanese term for karate students. There are several groups of karatekas all around the room and they all possess different colored belts. If you look towards the back, you can see a group of black belts on their knees surrounding a combat. One of the fighters is a sixteen year old girl named Breeanna Wade. You can see the passion in her eyes as she high kicks her opponent on the side of the head. Her opponent instantly falls to the ground, making Breeanna the automatic winner of the combat. Of course, she had to go through many struggles get to where she is now. Let me tell you the story of how she got here, but to do that we have to go back to the beginning.…
The best feeling in the world, was standing on the number one podium three times and…
As a result of most of my family being athletes, I was pretty much destined to carry on the torch in the world of sports. Wrestling took me by storm early at an early age and continued to grow on me throughout my teenage years. The topic that I want to express to readers is that of how wrestling affected my life.…
Have you ever felt the need to improve your life? I joined the cross country team in sixth grade to do just that. Cross country requires tremendous amounts of hard work, dedication, and never giving up to succeed in.…
As far as I can remember I might have been about 4 or 5 at the time and my mother registered us I mean herself and me in a gym for ding exercises in different sport majors . My mother had aerobic class and I joined gymnastic class with other girls in my age and I had a nice dress for it with a pale pink color with an veil skirt. I had a friend there who her name is Mozhde and our characters were really far from each other . We were always fighting together because of her arrogance . Although I was totally kind and humble she was proud and rough.…
To express his believe about stretching one’s limit, the great Guy Finley had once stated, “The limit of your present understanding is not the limit of your possibilities.” Inspired by his quote, I, Giang Pham, believe that I would be a valuable member of McGarvin’s Academic Pentathlon team. Based on my personal knowledge of Pentathlon, I have first-handedly experience the soul of a Pentathlete through various study sessions at Ethan Allen. Because of this, I have developed a deep insight of the components necessary to be a true Pentathlete. In addition to having first-hand experience, I also have extremely high expectations for both myself and other students, for it is essential in my academic growth. With this, one like myself could ultimately…
When I was a child, my favorite movie was The Wizard of Oz. Out of all of Dorothy’s friends, the Cowardly Lion was probably my least favorite. He had gone to ask the Wizard for courage and I didn’t understand why. Others wanted tangible items such as a brain or a heart and yet he wanted courage. I had thought of courage as something that you just dug down and found within yourself when you needed it not something not just a material thing that was necessary to live like a brain or a heart. Courage is something I always felt I had within, but it was confirmed within myself when my school hit major news over racial issues.…
“Wow! I did not know there were black Americans”. During the month I was in China, I heard this or a variant of it jokily said to me numerous times. I never took offense to it since I understood most of the media from America that came to China featured individuals who did not look like me. Furthermore, for those Americans who had come to China, they were mostly white and had come for business. While in China, I was able to share my experience as an African-American; I always found enjoyment sharing my experiences and it seemed to me those around me found enjoyment learning about a different side of America. With me sharing my experiences, they were being able to understand the diverse nature of the United States.…
Becoming a third-degree black belt was always my wish. I may have not put all of my effort into it, but I started trying my best realizing that I should be a role model for others around me.…
When I was in second grade I learned that I loved competing with people and being good at things. I joined a gymnastics gym near my house in second grade when i was 9, and started competing when i was 10. My mom told me that I have to do well in school if I was going to be focused on a sport along with school, or she would take me out of gymnastics. Soon enough, I wasn’t doing so well in social studies and comm skills. I was scared my mom would make me quit, But I worked as hard as I could so get back up there. Focusing more on school than outside activities, I got that grade back up and I continued with my favorite sport. I love gymnastics, but I don’t let it get in the way of school because school always comes first.…
During my sophomore year I was wrestling and I was on track to qualify for state I was beating many good people; in December, at one tournament I was wrestling and I ended up breaking my thumb. After I broke my thumb I was out for about three months so that hurt me really bad. It was hard for me to train while I had my cast off, but after I got it off I had a week before regionals to get ready and I had about ten pounds to lose and it would be hard for me to qualify for state. Once I got to regionals I started wrestling I was doing good I won my first two matches by pin; then in my semi finals match I was wrestling against the number one seed and he was pretty tough. While I was wrestling him I started off good and was beating six to two,…
Throughout my life, countless problems have plagued me, some more serious than others. Many of these issues were conquered with the help of my friends, leading to a closer bond with them. Other times, the issues have resolved themselves, providing me with more of a learning experience. There are those obnoxious problems I have not been able to solve, the issues that pester me months after they first occur. These are the problems that have truly tested my abilities and beliefs and made me think carefully.…
Colin Powell once said “The healthiest competition occurs when average people win by putting above average effort”. I always strive to be the greatest that I can be in my everyday activities, more specifically in my school work. I am a good candidate for Honors English because I am a progressive person and strive to do my best on a daily basis, it will help prepare me for courses I take in the future, and I am very committed to do well on all my school assignments.…
When I first stepped into Anderson High School as a freshman, I was exceedingly confident in myself. I played sports, had gotten good grades, and planned to have an amazing high school career. Freshman and sophomore year were a breeze. If I am being straightforward, I did not focus much on my schoolwork. I did what was required of me and got good grades, but I did not go above and beyond. I had always been told by upperclassman, “It only gets harder from here. Enjoy it while you can.” Now I realize what that means.…
