Personal Narrative: My Math Autobiography
My Math Autobiography When imagine math, I think of difficult, confusing material that I can’t seem to wrap my head around. In the third grade, I recall learning (or attempting) how to cross multiply. “Danica! I want you to come up to the board and try out this problem.” the teacher had insisted. As I approached the large, intimidating board, my mind went blurry. “What’s 2 x 16 again…?” I pondered. Wearily, I picked up the marker and wrote down the first number I could think of, assuming it could pass as an actual attempt at the problem. I sat back down at my desk and quickly took out my calculator to figure out what the real answer was. Of course, I was way off. I could feel my face flush in embarrassment, knowing I didn’t understand math like others did. …show more content…
Why? My seventh grade math teacher was a ‘yeller’. Any excuse she could find to yell at a student, she would. One day during a lesson, we were going over shapes, circles specifically. Learning how to calculate the circumference confused me beyond words. “Excuse me? I can’t remember the right equation for circumference. What is it again?” I questioned. “Are you serious? Have you not been paying attention this entire class?! I said it about 50 times already!!!” the teacher roared. In my disbelief, I sat in shock and remained

Black Boy is an autobiography of Richard Wright who grew up in the backwoods of Mississippi. He lived in poverty, hunger, fear, and hatred. He lied, stole, and had rage towards those around him; at six he was a "drunkard," hanging about in taverns. He was surrounded on one side by whites who were either indifferent to him, pitying, or cruel, and on the other by blacks who resented anyone trying to rise above the common people who were slaves or struggling.…

Marilyn Burns, the author of the article "Nine Ways to Catch Kids Up" realizes that a handful of students are at risk in each classroom. Burns came into this realization after talking with a student named Paul about multiplication. She discusses three issues that are essential to teaching mathematics. This includes helping students make the connections among mathematical ideas, to build the new information on the student's previous learning foundation, and to accompany correct answers with an explanation.…

On Tuesday the class talked about the following quote," To seek the source, the impulse of a story is like tearing a flower to pieces for wantonness"(Kate Chopin). This quote feels like a spot on description of how a book should be read. I took this quote to mean that when reading a novel, the impulse to understand the climax or hidden meaning in the story is so great that one is practically willing do anything to find the clue that will relieve them of this desire. The noun form of wantonness means a sexually immodest or promiscuous woman. I took the flower in the quote to stand for a promiscuous woman. Upon seeing this type of woman, many men would jump to "tear"(Chopin) at this sort, to simply satisfy their impulse. Similarly when one is at loss as to what a story is trying to reveal, they will will tear apart everything to find…

Today, I interviewed my calculus teacher, Muiny Somaya. I interviewed her because I was interested in knowing what her interests were and how she viewed her experiences in school. It was interesting to get perspectives on particular topics, such as what was her most difficult class she had taken in school. To my surprise, she didn’t respond multivariable calculus or organic chemistry assuming she had taken it. Instead, she responded literature! She told me the hardest part about topics like literature is that the answers aren’t straightforward. Many people can have different perspectives on works of literature, therefore leading to different responses. She prefers short stories and poems that are easy to read without confusing jargon that takes…

One thing that I think that sets me apart from other candidates applying to the University of California is that I put my heart and soul on every assignment, projects and exam. I work hard and put time on the assignment, projects and exam. I also give my full effort. Whenever I give my heart and soul on the assignment or projects, I am able to learn more than I should learn. I was able to discover new facts that I did not know. For example, in my Pre Calculus class, we did a project about global warming. I have to research about global warming and predict total population, average temperature, carbon dioxide emission in the next 50 and 100 years from now. I took my time and read articles about global warming. While looking at the statistic, I was asking myself what is cause of increasing population, temperature, and carbon dioxide emission. I realize those three factors are causing global warming. I made sure that I did the math correctly. I also made sure that I explained the definition, cause, and effect of the global warming. I gave my heart and soul by giving my best effort and making sure my data and information…

In general, I would describe my ability in math as average. I did well in elementary, but middle school was when I started having difficulties. When I took math I, I mostly got B’s and C’s on my tests, because I had a hard time understanding the material, or asking the teacher if I needed help with a certain concept. Overall, I think my average grade for math would be a B, but I would like to improve this year and get an A for a final grade. My parents definitely contributed to my overall success. If I didn’t have their support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I disliked learning trigonometry and graphing functions. I took math II online, so I wasn’t able to really use a worksheet and graph any problems for myself. I liked the substitution…

Marilyn Burns is one of the most highly respected mathematics educators today. Her article Writing in Math describes the various ways that teachers can integrate writing into their math curriculum. In the article she described four different categories she used to allow her students to write in her math class. The two that stuck out to me the most were keeping journals and explaining mathematical ideas. Writing in math class is important for many reasons. It is a great way to integrate subjects in the classroom. I believe that keeping journals in math class is an important aspect of mathematics. Keeping a journal will allow students to look back at all of the topics and material they have learned over the course of the year. They may have started…

The only below average grade I have gotten in my life happened last year in Pre-AP Pre-Calculus. Math had been my strong suit for as long as I could remember, and I was devastated when I got my final report card. Knowing that my senior year was approaching fast, I had to change my plans. I switched from AP Calculus to AP Statistics, because I learned that branch of mathematics was not for me. Currently I am earing an A- in “Stats” and understanding the material very well. As an added bonus, statistics is great for individuals entering into a field of marketing or…

My name is Casey Nicole Layton, and I am nineteen years of age. I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 20th, 1995. My parents used to call me an ice princess when I was little, and they always told me the same story when I’d ask how I had acquired that name. When they tried to bring me home from the hospital, we got stuck in the family car during a huge blizzard and the winter chill got to me, and they used this fairytale-like story to explain my nickname, as well as why my hands and feet were always cold. I am the third born out of six children. When I am not attending IUP, I live with my mum in Cheswick, Pennsylvania, with my step-dad and half siblings. At home we currently have 6 lizards, 5 cats, 3 dogs, and a bunny. In my spare time I breed snakes for a living with my mum, and we currently have over 50 snakes taking over our dining room. When I’m not doing that, I enjoy photography, painting, and crafting. Naturally, I am a busy-body who enjoys working hard and spending time with my family.…

Which work and didn’t work sometimes because you still have to learn the formulas? What did you attribute your success or failure in mathematics to? I would like to blame my failures on my grade schools but I had a part in my failures in math to. But, I would like to attribute my mathematical success to my mother and the Huntington learning center that she had to pay for in order for me to pass algebra 2 back in high school. Jenny took Algebra I in eighth grade. It was a pretty tough class, and they just started the factoring unit. Jenny knew that she was going to have to live through it. “Mr. Gurkovich, is this the answer?” “Now class I want you to realize that Math is an art, not a subject. There’s a way to do certain things. You have to have a process. You cannot just concentrate on the answers, look at your process, that’s where the answer lies.” After that day, Jenny realized that the answer lies within the process. But, in factoring if you get too focused on the process the result might turn out wrong.…

I remember on case in point where my social studies teacher saw something in the way that I learned in a totally different manner compared to the other students. She pulled me aside one day and asked me to set up a meeting with my parents so they could discuss my level of critical thinking. Truthfully, coming from a 5th grade I thought I was in trouble or I was going to be put in a lower level class for students that were late blossomers. Fortunately she wanted to discuss putting me in a curriculum that would accelerate my style of learning much further by enrolling me in a class with higher level students.…
