Dear Cousin, How are you? Well, I am happily settled at my new home. By the way, my journey actually turned out to be very stimulating. Let me describe it to you. I started my journey about thirty-three days ago. My parents were the ones who sent me to Ellis Island. The reason was that there were many wars and conflicts in Italy, and my parents wanted me to be safe. I wasn’t born at that time when Italy participated in the Crimean War about only thirty-nine years ago. Also, Sardinia appropriated the other Italian states and formed a constitutional monarchy only thirty-two years ago. So, Mamma and Papa simply wanted to protect me from any future political chaos. I was traveling to Ellis Island with my Uncle Antonio. He looked about forty years of age and was very strict and precise. If I did any minor

Before I entered the ship, I had to use the railroad to travel from Rome to Rotterdam, a major European port. This consumed about one whole day. Once the humongous steamship, named the Delta, arrived at Rotterdam, I was granted permission to enter the ship. While entering, I was examined by doctors, government officials, and steamship company officers for any health or legal problems. After the examination, I entered the ship and was disgusted by the conditions. I was in third class, also known as steerage, and it was very congested. I ended up standing in a huge crowd. And even worse than the crowd was the horrible smell spreading on the ship. Even the food quality was tremendously bad. The food I brought from home rapidly ran out. So, I was forced to survive on the simple food onboard, which was mainly soup and stew. Hence, I felt extremely miserable because of the terrible smell and horrible food. I also felt jealous of the first and second class passengers. They deserved to sit in comfort while I, on steerage, was compressed in a

I have heard many people around me saying that you should go walk the Brooklyn Bridge at least once and I never have a chance to fulfill it. Through this opportunity, I called my friend up to accompany me to walk the Bridge for the first time. Based on the information from the history of the United States, the Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883 and considered as an engineering marvel for that time. It remains as one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. During mid-1800s, the ferries connected Manhattan and Brooklyn. Ferries was a major convenience transportation for us, the people of that day were used to oars and sails to ride boats. These faster, more reliable ferries helped Brooklyn grow until the bridge was build. When…

The first time I attended Macy ‘s Herald Square on W 24th St I was a junior in high school. My fashion merchandising and management 1B class went there on a field trip to acquire some of their history and information on what it takes to run such a large retail store. When our tour guide was finished we had free time to explore the store. I remember wanting to shop but being too overwhelmed because I wasn’t looking for anything particular and couldn’t decide where to start or where to go. At the end of the day I didn’t purchase anything. Although I was amazed a retail store could be 3 acres, I realized that day I prefer smaller retail stores. I wasn’t back to Macy’s Herald Square until I began going to FIT in fall 2015. I went back with my…

When I moved to New York to live with my dad, my life and ethics took a major turn. Many things changed, from school, to sports, to even the way I dressed. The people are different, the culture is different, and the way people talked was even different. The reason these changes had to be made was because of the black population in Virginia, they were all very gangster, and the New York population were mainly white, not that I have a problem with blacks, but they were very rude and inconsiderate. I am not racist at all, just people there are ignorant. In Virginia where I used to live, it was considered the ghetto part of my town, so I had to look, and act the part. But in New York where I live now, it’s the total opposite, a much more civil and calm town. I had to make so many changes to my life to adjust to the way people live In New York compared to Virginia. Not only the people and the culture, but my family in New York has a completely different way of living, by that I mean how they look at things, what’s right and what’s wrong in their eyes (I moved from Virginia to New York in 2007, when I was around 12 years old, in 7th grade). After the move life went forward, I got better grades…

In 1752 I was a seventeen year old destitute living in Scotland, Ireland. I had no real skill-trade or education, but with high ambitions to learn and become a collective dependant I would earn a stable lively-hood in one of the New World colonies. I suffered losses of loved who fell sick and died with only a few remaining that were as impoverished as myself. I feared there would be no prospect of a better life in Scotland and contracted myself as an indentured servant for passage to the New World colonies. Along with many others I boarded a New World merchant ship that specialized in the trade of textiles and clothing. In exchange for travel, food, and decent health, I was sold for profit to proprietors in the New World. The voyage to New…

Let me tell you about my journey to get to Ellis Island. As you know, I went to Ellis Island to live with my mother since my father had passed away roughly 7 years ago and I was living with my aunt and uncle in Italy. My mother had gone to Ellis Island a few years previous to my own journey to start a new life for us. My aunt and uncle had to save up to five years wages (2200 liras). I had to walk about 50 miles to get to the seaport! The trip across the Atlantic lasted about a week and a half. The fortunate first- and second- class passengers stayed in staterooms and cabins. Alas, like the majority of all the people on the steamship, I was in third class, which is…

In 2008, I moved to an apartment in Rockaway Park located in Far Rockaway. I’ll admit, the neighborhood was far from attractive when I first arrived. The rumor mills stirred up a storm suggesting that Far Rockaway was well… “Rough around the edges” for a lack of a better term. Working on Riker’s Island, most of our patients who reside in Queens often came from Far Rockaway, thereby confirming the rumors that the town was riddled with crime, infested with drugs and plagued with anything one might consider rebellious or unscrupulous were true. And on my first day, I got lost and winded up surrounded by… you guessed it, The Projects. That was enough to dither anyone from any potential Real Estate or, in my case, rental agreement – regardless how appealing the offer could be. So why did I agree to move there in spite of the distasteful first impression? Before I can answer that, allow me to dive into the demographic details and…

I will never forget the first time I saw NYU. I was seven years old standing in Washington Square Park looking at this magnificent building, unable to look away. I had no idea what this place was, but I was amazed none the less. At that moment my mother, an immigrant from the former Soviet Union, told me something I will never forget. She said, “I came here so that you would have the opportunities that I never dreamed of, this is one of the best schools in the world and one day I hope you get the type of education this place offers.”…

My first trip to Las Vegas was the worst plane trip every, I had experienced all types of emotions from Norfolk to Dallas. In Norfolk my flight was delayed due to the weather, then another two hour delay in Dallas. All I wanted was to get to Vegas. On my flight I sat beside a man who never been on a plane. This guy behavior was the worst. I tried to convince him to read, listen to music or drink. I even tried to start a conversation to calm him down. My friends were laughing they knew my patience was running out. I was thinking to myself knocking him out. We enter into a storm the thunder and lightning was bad the sounds silence the whole flight. The Pilot came on and informed us we are in Dallas unable to land due to the weather. Looking out…

When we finally arrived at Ellis Island I was just thankful for solid ground. I took in a breath of fresh air and thought, “I am going to have such a nice life here in America.” I was quickly brought back to reality when I was issued a literacy test. Luckily, I was always a good student. After that I thought I would be free to go but I still had to answer questions like “What are your political views?” You would think that wouldn’t matter that much but I watched some of the people I just got off the boat with, after months, get right back on to travel back to Ireland and back to starvation.…
