“Anthony!” Mom yelled.
I quickly scrub my teeth as the electricity in my toothbrush runs out, signaling I’m done. I rinse my mouth and scramble down the stairs.
With time catching up, my breakfast manages to fly straight into my hands.
My mom’s bionic eye that was charging on the counter almost fell down, but my hands barely save it from what would be a shattering drop.
Out the door now, I reach for my bike. Obviously with this great day happening, it clatters onto the ground. I sigh a sigh of disappointment and walk my bike to the end of my driveway and leave for school.
No kids are on the street as they are probably already at highschool.
“Anthony hold up!” Cory called. As usual, my friend is always …show more content…
late. So if he’s pedalling behind me, I am late for my first day of school. Today the town is as busy as a sloth. No cars are out on the road and it’s a breeze of a ride to school.
In every class I listen to the same rules every teacher says. As we pack up, the teacher interrupts us
“There is one final emergency announcement I have to make before you all leave.” Mr .Beck says. “There is an asteroid expected to hit near our town tonight.” Mr. Beck boringly announces, “That’s all I have to say.”
I auto-pilot my way on the way home thinking about this.
We need solar energy to survive in our city, and if an asteroid hits, anything is possible.
“Bye!” Cory is always home as fast as possible to read and do his homework. Though always late for school, his grades are near perfect.
I pull up my bike and I shut the door with more force than expected. “Hey Mom.”
Must be in her VR room I decide. I bounce downstairs, and open the soundproof door with my house pass card. “Mom,” I call out, “Did you hear about the asteroid hitting our city?”
Mom takes off her VR set,“Yes,” she replies. “Well, thanks for reminding me that I’ve spent too much time on here.”
Her eyes look a little sore and she looks a little tired.
Mom follows as we go upstairs.“Is Dad coming home today?” I ask, “ Isn’t today the day he is supposed to be coming home from his job?”
By now we’re already upstairs, with Mom ordering a new pizza, extra, extra everything. Normally I don’t like to eat fat foods, but if Dad is coming home today, then I’m willing to eat whatever he is. I go to my room and open my binder, looking at all the work I have and reluctantly, I start my studies and time flies …show more content…
by.
The doorbell rings and I jump up from my chair and bolt out the room. I open the door for him. “You’re ho-,” but I’m interrupted by the man in place where my dad should be.
Mom is up and behind me and she turns off the television.
“Hi there,” he says solemnly. The way he looks doesn’t look like he could speak in another tone. He has dead straight eyes and a masklike face of cold, hard stone. “ Your dad is dead. He was fixing a solar panel when the capacitor shocked him.”
He must be lying. Right, I tell myself.
“We can arrange for a burial cost.”
Mom breaks down and starts crying.
“Arnold!” Mom says, “He’s dead.” Mom releases a sob of despair. “I loved him so much.”
Meanwhile, in my head, I’m in a blank room. My eyes must look wide, filled with loss. I think back to the times when he would take me out fishing or to go watch a movie. He’s done so much for me. I must be making sounds in my head because I hear a siren.
“This is not a drill. Go to your emergebunkers immediately.” The man quickly runs to his car in a panic really. “Sorry, but take care.” He drives off nearly twice as fast as the speed limit. Only half a minute later we were in our bunker. We had multiple cans of food in there and a small hole in the ground for business. Our bunker is about twenty feet wide in both directions and about seven feet tall. Obviously it’s underground about five feet. The city installed these ever since a horrible plague that cause multiple deaths. The people that survived, thankfully could’ve been brought to a better condition with some electronic parts such as stronger arms and legs for the ones that didn’t work anymore.
This must be a serious situation because we only use bunkers in really serious situations. Such as a plague and we need to decontaminate the city. Through a speaker in the wall the voice says, “By now you should all be in your emergebunkers. There is an asteroid as big as three miles wide in diameter expected to hit just 3 miles away.” That night I must’ve got only about an hour of sleep, I once heard the estimate of the size of the asteroid that took out the dinosaurs was about seven miles wide. What could a collision that close to where we are do even if the asteroid is less than seven miles
wide? Upon my awakening Mom is still drained of life and I guess should be too. It feels less powerful but I can still feel the pain. “Mom,” I say, “Did you get any sleep at all last night. She shakes her head no. I sigh and wonder what state mom is in. Obviously,I can tell that Mom is weak and will take a long time for her to be able to stand up and take action again.
I try to contact Cory with my cell but there is no service. I wonder how he’s doing.
I check our bunker’s outside camera and that’s gone too. I can see that Mom is charging her second pair of bionic eyes.
