Now the butterflies came, and I did not feel so good, but I sucked it up. When we got into the locker room we put our football pants, our cleats, and our undershirt on, and got ready to leave. We grabbed our helmet and our shoulder pads and loaded on to the bus. When we arrived at the high school we unloaded the bus, and we got dressed. We were ready to play some football. A couple of minutes later our rival showed up. We were about to become engulfed in to a dog fight. We were playing the Hattiesburg Tigers. The other team wanted offense first, so I got to stay on the field because I am on first string defense. After that first hit, I had gained my confidence back, and did not miss another tackle that game. We won that game 24-7, which was our first victory.
After that first game I became more confident in myself than I ever had before. I was covering my receiver correctly and efficiently. I would make up for the linebacker if they had a misconception or made a mistake. I never got a the butterflies again.
Now in 8th grade I am the starting safety. I am one of the hardest tacklers, even though the running backs are ten times taller than me. It was a incredible transition from the first practice to the last. Even though we did not get that poster, our record was four wins and three loses. Football gave me goosebumps in the beginning, but at the end I was as confident as a National Football League quarterback.
