One of the most important things in the sport of running to me is to be able to know that I can and have confidence in what I am doing. I can do this. It also helps that my mom is always on the sidelines no matter what, if it is a golf course, or track, coaching me, “Relax! You are strong Carly! You can do it!” My response to this is to think about how far I have come and how far I have to go. “Three miles really isn’t that far” is something that always goes in my mind following her words. Not giving up, and always trying your hardest is something that can be easy for some, but can also be difficult to do and sometimes can even seem impossible. I have first-hand experienced this during a race. There have been multiple times in both the 800 and 5k races that I have been mentally defeated after people have passed me. Instead of saying something encouraging to myself or believing that I can be running up with them I let them go without me. This is something that I still struggle with but am working on it so I am more persistent in knowing I can. Last meet, the girl I had been running with each other but she gradually made a lead on me. Instead of walking and giving up, knowing I could not catch her, I made a goal of picking someone else off before the end of the race that was nearing.
